What's happening to my brugs? They all got a few holes from a hail storm, but I don't think that's the problem as others are growing and look fine. One has nearly died of this problem and this one is on its way. If you know what it is; please tell me what to do for it........
DISASTER!
Could it be sunburn? Did you put them right out in the sun from the house?
Looks like chemical burn? Did anyone spray weed killer or something on that order?
That was my first thought, how do the tops look?
On a thread, dropping leaves, I reported a similar situation and my leaves looked exactly like that, some also curled. It was chemical burn and there were several eye witnesses. My neighbor saw it and just this afternoon we learned that several garden, almost in a straight line were damaged, I received the least damage of all, everyone else's plants took a nose dive and are gone. In our case, a crop duster dropped some chemical(s) and, as it turns out, the crop duster knew when it happened and reported it to the authorities and his company will pay for damages, of which, I have zero, my brug is going to live so I'm a happy camper. Might it be possible that something similar happened in your area?? Or, might a handy man or some other worker sprayed something that hit them??? I could not believe my eyes, when my beautiful 2 year brug lost all the leaves, with exception of a few that apparently were protected by leaves that were hit. My brug will make it and I hope yours does too!!! I repeat, my damage was *exactly* like yours and mine was definitely chemical damage. SherryLike
Well, I am surrounded by summer cottages and most don't have any gardens and are often vacant. These 2 are the most protected ones. There are 3 more in the row that are untouched so far and have recovered completely from that hail storm 2 weeks ago. They get a good bit of shade, in fact, they get more shade than the others.
Should I remove the bad leaves and hope they will recover. This problem hit one first and then this one. Could it be a disease; maybe a blight?
Woodspirit,I agree with the others. That is some kind of burn.
Sunburn,weedkiller or fertilizer.Lawn or garden fertilizer(8-8-8)
will do that if it gets on the leaves.I have never seen a disease or insect damage that looked like that.
Maybe i got some of that Bayer's on them. I'll just pull the leaves off and hope they recover.
Oh, if you used the Bayer full strength (as per the instructions of 4 tbs per one quart of water), and it splashed on the leaves, that's probably what did it. I have been mixing it one quart at a time to hopefully help me keep this from happening. As I recall the bottle said not to get it on the foliage. It also said that you can use it at half strength with a hose end sprayer if you want to do whole beds. This is the only non-organic product I'm using, and on brugs only. They're the only thing I've had major bug problems with. Hope this is helpful :) Gretchen
That was probably it. My spousal unit called it Betty's Bruggie Blight.
LOL. Yes, pick them all of and put in plastic bag. I bet the plant will be fine. Is the top growth ok? Brugs are really rather hardy! Let us know how it does!
You all know I'm a newbie, but I'm gaining experience as I go. If your leaves get wet, from rain, watering, whatever - get them out of the sun. If you can't, try to shield them. That's what happend to mine. Mine wasn't as bad, and I was able to pluck off the bad leaves and mine are ok. And you can to too, and I recommend that, because from what I've learned, damaged leaves take too much energy from the rest of the plant trying to heal. It might not be pretty at first, but it's worth it.
Somebody please jump in and correct me if I'm wrong - I wouldn't want to give bad advice. But keep in mind that mine are doing much better after I took the bad leaves off.
Kinda like houseplants - you pluck off the bad leaves - they take up too much energy.
If ALL of them got hurt - OUCH - and we need Monika in here immediately to help you. I'm so sorry that happened!
Hubby asked me yesterday if I wanted to move mine, as he was watering and I said YES! HELP me! (they are heavy).
Hi, Woodspirit1,
Sorry to hear of your bad brugie experience. I will be very careful now when I get the roses planted and fertilized. I've always used chemicals before, but it really makes me think organic is the way to go. See you this weekend? Sounds like the brugies will be ok. Hopes and prayers.
Barbara
Looking a whole lot better. Happy for you that it was a short term thing.
I was going to also send a pic of Big Yeller, which was the worst damaged of the 2, but DG won't take the pic. I had trouble posting Isabella, too.
