So excited thrilled and they are not even open yet :)

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Drumroll............

First bud is about to open and I can't stand it!!!!!!!

First Brug bloom for us ever. It is a shortie, only about 16" tall, and like Jeffs, I can see the blooms will scrape the ground.

Now, here is a visual for you all. I will be laying down on the ground photo these and smell them, because I have been waiting forever to experience the brug fragrance! LOLOLOL!

Question - it's kinda 'bushy' and I'm not pinching the stems on the stalk. But I really would like to grow these in standard form. Should I start pinching? Or are they too small yet?

Also, where can I get Monika's Book?

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Sue...exciting....just wanted to remind you, unless the plant is planted in the ground, you can raise the pot up, so you don't have to lie so far under it!! Be sure to post pictures!

I just got monikas book from Mary....mary@brugmansias.net
She had to send to Germany for it, so it took quite awhile to come. I think others may have it in the US already! I am sure someone will tell you!

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I think Calla has a stock of books already in the US. You should check with her in case she is already sold out.

Ashton, IL(Zone 5a)

Sue,
Yes some of my cuttings started last fall are about to bloom and I've been thinking the same thing: I will finally smell a brug!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

You know we will be waiting! Nothing like that first one, they all open slow,or so it seems,I check mine every 10 minutes,Anticipation!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Hey, Root, ya think Kell will hit us with Anticipation lyrics, or is that one outta her era???

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Sue: I'm so excited for you! I know the feeling you have right now. I didn't think my first one would ever open! Believe me, it was worth every minute of the wait! What cultivar is she? Several of my seedlings have y'd and one is covered in tiny buds -- I am so excited to see what they look like. Hoping for pink, but I'll take anything :) Gretchen

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Congratulations on the bloom! Have fun down there....lol.

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Here she is! I propped the flower up on a little stake to get this shot, since she is kinda laying on the ground. I'm amazed at how fast this brug is growing though.

The fragrance is so awesome. Wow.

Beautiful! It's so exciting isn't it. Always amazes me to see such big flowers on little plants.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Very pretty double white! You got a top piece for it to bloom so early. It will behard to get a tree out of this one. However it may send up a sucker that will grow taller before it Ys and when grown on its own will be an alley tree.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Well, that is a sweet, precious bloom, so pretty, congrats, Sue_WA!!!!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Beauty!!! Did I miss where it was said? Is this Candida Double white? Very nice!

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Thanks, feel like a proud mama here. :)

I can't wait to get Monika's book so I can grow some alley trees because you must know this is a big goal for me now! :) :) ;)

I must e-mail the lady who sent me these cuttings because I did not write down what kind these are! Kicking myself!!

Have fed and smelled it again. LOL!

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

lol Sue you are too cute! Congratulations on your bloom!!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

The leaves don't look fuzzy enough for CDW,I may be wrong,it sure has the shape,I love the smell of CDW so give it a sniff for me.
Losttagitis, yep you are hooked,it is one of the early signs!

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Hey Root, Okay, I can go feel the leaves. :) The smell reminds me of? I would say... rose/gardinia mix. It is enough to make me walk across the yard to smell it! LOL!

But what is fuzzy? I mean, I have three other brugs that have different leaf 'looks'. What is the fuzz factor?

I really am looking forward to learning about these beautiful plants.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Sue,some leaves have a soft fuzz to them.

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Exellent photos! :)

Will check the fuzziness factor and report back with photos!

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Congrats Sue!!! Thanks for sharing your joy with the rest of us!!! The leaves on my CDW look and feel like velvet...

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

In 7 weeks, this plant has grown three times it's size. I can't get over it!! Outperforming my musa basjoo!! I have the brugs on a regular feed schedule ( a shot of the 20 20 20 every two to three weeks) and side dressed with compost. The flowers are few, I am hoping that if I overwinter it that next year I will have more. I have several growing. I have a few more growing like gangbusters (same size) but no blooms. :( Different leaves.

And I have another in a 5 gallon pot that is small, but put out a lovely pink/peach flower. No fragrance and not as ruffly but gorgeous.

Hopefully next season I will have learned enough to grow better. :-D

This photo (taken on July 21st) shows it a little smaller than three feet, but it has grown taller since!. The hotter it gets, the faster it grows. Love it!

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

WOW! It is a very nice double.

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Thanks Monika - I do have to admit I have not read your entire book (Fessing up here!) but intend to!! So do you think the new branch will grow taller and Y next season??

I am aimin' high for TREES!

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

It may even Y this year. I would try not to cut it back in the fall. Do you overwinter your brugs?

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Yes I will overwinter these. I will always want Brugs in the garden now!! :) If they don't fit in my small greenhouse then in my garage.

I think this might be 'Insignis White' does anyone have photos of an Insignis White to share?

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

Sue, How exciting! I'm still waiting for my first Brug bloom. I have a plant that has "Y"ed but the buds are still very small.
I suppose every "Newbie" gets this excited!
Congrats! & it is a beautiful double. I like the Dbls!

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Congratulations Sue, that is really pretty. A bud appears and the next thing you know, you feel like a kid in a candy store.

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

For sure it is a lot of fun isn't it?? I even have DH (ever so slightly) thrilled about the Brugs. For the growth rate alone! I do have another coming on - I think it might be yellow. I am checking daily :)

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

YEAH SUE! I'm excited for you... Keep up the pictures.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Very Nice!!!! :-)

Auburn, WA(Zone 8b)

Sue, Your brugs are looking great. Congrats! Most flowers do look yellow when first emerging. Some stay yellow & some change to white or pink. It will be a fun surprise for you.
Linda

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)
