Are there any rescuers in NC you know?

I was unable to sleep last night, plagued by visions of a red furred, blue-eyed but sick dog in NC. My mother-in-law went on a spiritual retreat in the NC mountains this past weekend. On the first night she was there she was on her way back to her room after being drummed over in a native american ceremony when she heard something following her. She said all she could see were bright blue eyes. She wasn't sure if she was having some kind of waking dream at first but stopped and stooped down when she saw a puppy peering at them both from the woods some distance from the path. The puppy had one blue eye and one brown eye and was too afraid to come near.

Well the mother dog was immediately friendly so she spent the whole weekend feeding the dog and tossing food to the puppy. She said they both were so covered in ticks it was disturbing to pet them but the mother acted as if she were in heaven when she did.

My MIL lives in a condo and is unable to have dogs. She figured of the 20 or so of them that were there that someone would take the dogs, but everyone claimed to be unable to. So we are trying to think what we can do. I am going to call the land owners where the retreat took place to see if I sent some medicine and some food -or money for some-if they'd be willing to take it out to them.

Does anyone know of anyone who could take them? No Animal Control please-and no one who would euthanize them. Or anyone have any ideas on what I should do? I just do not have the means to take in 2 more dogs, but I fear I will be unable to sleep if I do not at least try to help them.
