Hi, My 70 foot tulip tree fell day before yesterday. Now my shade garden is a full sun garden. I have to move all of my plants after the tulip tree gets cleaned up. I have a lot of work coming in the near future! The base of it rotted from all of the rain we have gotten in the last 2 years. I had a really nice shade garden under it.
Tulip Tree Fell
So sorry to hear about your loss, it must have been a beautiful sight in full bloom. Do you have enough shade elsewhere to put all these plants?

The flowers were just starting to bloom. I do have another shade garden started up next to the woods under a huge oak tree. Thanks for asking!
I feel your pain. I lost an oak tree that was one of my favorites last year during Hurricane Isabel. A house in my neighborhood lost three trees out of their small front yard. To add a little salt to the wound, I notice that many of the other plants in their yard that are now in full sun are dying. Oh the joys of working with Mother Nature.
Good luck,
Brent
I'll tell you-it still looks strange--everytime I go out the back door and look up there--no huge tree--all sun. I got to get the shade lovers moved. The variegated Solomen's seal has leaf burn but my Pestasties seems to be holding it's own. The one plant that I lost was a Rhodie--it was 3' tall and last winter the deer had eat all of the leaves off of it and it was just starting to come back. Now it's just 6" tall and I don't know if it will grow again or not. Thanks for your sympathy! Sandy
Sandy - I'll bet if you get that azalea dug up soon you can salvage it. I'd dig out extra wide around it to avoid damaging the root system too much. Please keep us posted on your relocation progress.

Sorry to hear of your Tulip Tree loss! Our Tulip Poplar (80 footer) came down on our deck and staircase during Hurricane Isabel last Fall. The root ball just pulled right out of the soil! You can well imagine the size of that tree! It stretched from half way in our yard, onto the staircase/deck and into our aluminum siding on the back of our house! You haven't seen damage until one of these trees fall! We finally got a crew in here to repair & replace all the damage....6 mos. later!
I'm sorry that you lost your tree, but Tulip Trees are known for their weak surface roots, plus they tend to drop a lot of limbs and debris during a rainstorm. If you want the shade for your plants, choose a tree that has a deeper root system and will provide the coverage to your plants, so they don't fry. Lots of wonderful opportunities to put something in its place and have a whole new look!
How goes it on the clean-up Sandy? The chelone love their new home...it's been raining daily for a week I think now (or at least it seems that way!).
Shirley1md, We are not going to put another tree where the tulip tree was, it was too close to the house. The tulip tree was 2 trees butted together. My DH's dad planted them that way. They rotted in bt them and one of them fell last year and the other one fell this year. I have a smaller tulip tree that we planted this spring up the hill farther but we are not going to let it get as big. Sorry to hear of all the damage that you had! I am thinking that I am going to plant daylilies in my new garden.
langbr, My husband and son got the tree cut up. It was HUGE! I still am in the process of moving plants out and up the hill further. I have an oak tree next to the woods where my new shade garden is at. Later on I will take some pictures and try to post them. Thanks for asking!
langbr, I am glad your turtleshead is growing good for you. They like a wet spot. Some of mine are standing up pretty good--not all of them got whacked with the tree! I have comphrey up there and it is still blooming--you couldn't kill that if you wanted too! lol
