It's A Jungle Out There

Northern California, CA

Have spent the last several days with machete in hand (along with some regular old clippers, etc) hacking away to get some more sun into the jungle.

The red New Zealand Flax has been divided into 20 or so plants and banished to the back hill wild land garden. Just too much of a brute to let the other plants live in peace. I've replaced it with a new variety of variegated flax that is supposed to be not as robust. Only time will tell.

A few images of part of my jungle.

said it before... I'll say it again.
you rock.

course I find there to be a serious lack of ferns.... but than I'm biased :-)

Thanks everyone, and DR I also find a serious lack of ferns here.

My favorites are the tree ferns, but they take up a LOT of space. I do have some common ferns on the shady side of the house and a few small ones around the pond waterfall, and some potted Bostons, Ostrich .....now you've got me thinking that I need to go look for some ferns. :-)

Most people travel the world to see something unique and unusual...you have it all in your backyard Happenstance!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Absolutely love it!!!!

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

It looks like a small slice of rainforest! I love it! I wish I lived some place warm in winter.

Mount Hermon, LA(Zone 8b)

Sigh... you know better than to do that (first picture). LOL. What are those teensy purple flowers just above the rock? As always, your pictures are a pleasure to behold.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I wanna live in your yard!

Morning All -

Just checked and the jungle is still there. :-) Met a resting dragonfly on my stroll this morning.

LSP that is just common Lobelia erinus, acts like a perennial here and comes back each spring in new places. I like it because it is easy and gives that jolt of color. Come August/September it drives me crazy because the ground squirrels are crazy about it too and chew it down to little nubs.

happenstance, like tree ferns but think they take up too much room? run a google on Blechnum gibbum, or Blechnum 'Silver Lady.
only 5ft of trunk when mature, and at most 3meter wingspan.

DR - now I'm in real monkey doo-doo.

No less than SIX ferns jumped in the back of the Cherokee as I drove by the nursery to get to the grocery store.

How do those plants always know just when to hang out at the curb when I'm going to be passing by?!

Mount Hermon, LA(Zone 8b)

Hmmmmm. That's about as convincing as saying that those puppies, kittens, and everything else "Just followed me home!" LOL. I'll bet you are going to find wonderful places for them. Ferns will be especially fitting in The Jungle.

Willacoochee, GA(Zone 8b)

yah, same thing happened to me and I ended up with a wholesale fern nursery...

they just followed me here.

It wasn't my fault!!

Your photos & your gardens are so, so beautiful & such an inspiration. Have you considered doing a a book?

Mount Hermon, LA(Zone 8b)

Glad you like my fern choices, they look right at home and was tempted by a couple of other small ones, but will see how the changing angle of the sun impacts these before trying any more.

A book.....oh I don't think so, I have been involved in the book thing with several friends (all on vintage dinnerware) and the amount of work is tremendous. Marketing and promotion of an unknown author is difficult and the success rate is pretty minimal.

I am working on a website to hold some of the images of my garden, but it is pretty much on hold til colder weather. It is easy to get caught up in building a website.....days can go by and who would tend the garden??? So little time, so many things that are wonderful and interesting!
