Calalily seedlings

Petaluma, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi all, this is my first post, I've learned so much at Dg, I only wish I had discovered it sooner:) This is my first year with brug seeds-from Calalily & they are doing really great thanks to all the expert advice here. I've seen several brugs in ground here (probably planted in 1940's or '50's) can I plant directly in soil in zone 9? wasn't sure if older brugs were more adaptable than newer crosses? Thank you for any help! Kathy

Welcome Kathy!!! My gosh those look wonderful! You are doing great. What are the crosses?
Im sure someone in your zone will come along and tell you about pots or planting them directly into the ground. Cant wait to see more pictures.

WELCOME!!! Glad to see you here. How cold does it get in Petaluma? Great rose nurseries by you!

I would think if there are brug trees, you are safe esp if you plant them by a south wall or close to some protection. I have had mine live outdoors for many years. In the last bad freeze one of them died back to the ground but came back. Last winter I had some leaf frost burn but no stem death. Some top die back though on the tallest ones. I live in the Bay Area.

Your seedlings look better than mine! Keep posting, I want to see what lovelies you get, Kathy!

Welcome Kathy! Your seedlings look great. I'd also like to know what crosses you are growing.

Hi Kathy. Welcome to the Brug craze. Your plants look great.

Thank you all for the kind welcome:) The seeds I got from Calalily were labeled Orange, Peach & yellow crosses (bonus pack) and one pack said Brugmansia Mixed seeds. The packs had way more than the 10 seeds, and I have 19 seedlings, 1 of them was a tiny little guy I almost didn't see. He's coming along though & I'm hoping he'll be the star lol!
Kell, the brugs I've seen here are multi stem and do look like they get some frost damage, but are filled with flowers. So I'm hoping mine will be ok (test planted 2 in the ground) & they are growing faster than in the pots. My main love (but maybe not when I see my first brug flower!) is roses:)
Thanks again, Kathy

Welcome Kathy. Nice looking babies you have there. I'm betting you will have some beauties from those seeds of Cala's.

If I were in zone 9 all my brugs would be in the ground.

Riverside, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi, Kwells, I very seldom post here (in fact, this may be the first time). But I want to say "Hi" to you as I am in Riverside,CA and my beloved sister lives up there in Sonoma, very close to you. So you are a neightbor:-)

I have the Brug Addiction, too. Only I have 1/4 acre in which to exercise my passion. I have recruited other family members to help my grow on my seedlings.

It's good to see another West coaster here. Best of luck,

Vickey

Well Hesperus, do not be shy. We want to see your brugs also! LOL.

Kathy, what I would do is take cuttings to keep inside, of the ones you can't live without at the end of the summer. That way if we have a killer winter you have insurance. I also put up a hoophouse to winter over my alley trees. I would hate to lose those!

Those seedlings look great!

Hi hesperus. Hope you will come back often. We would love to see pictures of your brugs and hear all about which ones you are raising. Bet they are beautiful.

Petaluma, CA(Zone 9a)

Kell, thanks so much for your help about taking cuttings, they are so small now I just hope I get to see them bloom this year & see what colors they are.
Calalily, thank you also for the extra seeds & the Abutilon & Asarina seeds germinated great too.
Hesperus, so glad you posted, please let us see some pictures:) I lived in the town of Sonoma for 15 years before moving back to Petaluma. I have about 1/2 acre, but my DH has a ride-around lawn mower (it's a lawn tractor! he yells:)
so a lot of it is lawn-but I'm slowly trying to make the lawn smaller & the flower beds bigger.
This is such a great site, I am learning more each day:)

You're very welcome. You will have to post pics when the abutilons bloom. I'm anxious to see what comes from those.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi Kathy...good to see another Californian! I am new to brugs this year. Your seedlings look great! There is a nice group of people here and they have so much info. to share, as you already know!
Look forward to seeing you around and to seeing your photos!

Margie in San Jose, also zone 9...but too new to brugs to answer your question of how well they over-winter here!
