Goldfish (No Koi ALLOWED!)

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

LOL!!!!!!

This is for all us poor koi`less or nearly koi`less people! (kidding-it's really for the comet goldfish)

They sell them as feeders- for very very cheap. Normally they are only a few inches long and not very "showy". Well...
Let me tell you something.
Some have the most beautiful finnage! LONG flowing fins that look like angels gliding through the water.

Look here- our female looks like this, but she has a bit of red in her and on her head.Look at the white Comet.

Are slender in body shape and have long single tail fin. ..

Hehehe, and to think- they are like $.25 at a LFS!
Anyone have some in their ponds?! I wanna see!!! LOL

I too have goldfish I bought as feeder fish and they are as beautiful as any koi. About three and a half years ago we buried an old 500 or maybe 700 gallon stock waterer. It is my little pond. I got a small filter and a few plants and wanted to try some fish just to see if they would live. Went to Petsmart and bought feeder fish for 9 cents apiece. They kept asking what I was feeding them to. I could not get it across to them I was just putting in a pond to be there. Anyway I got about 10 and they did just fine. I bought 6 more later on. Well, over 3 years later they are thriving. A few were very small (I think they were called rosy reds) and never got any bigger. About 3 are over 6 inches long, some are gold, some are gold and white, and some have beautiful fins. Since last fall I haven't even been feeding them. They are eating algae, bugs or anything that falls in and they are thriving. Evidently I was feeding way too much because I don't have to clean the filter half as much now. If something happens to them I won't be out a big bunch of moolah!

Were always on the look out for used stock troughs! (they cost too much new!)
Ya got any pictures of your fishies? Would love ta see them. :)

Our Comets last year had babies outside. We brought them in for the winter. We had 30 fishies in this aquarium over winter. When they hatch they are black, then turn the shiny gold, then orange. They are now outside in the big pond with the big fish.
Comets and a few fantails and one koi are what we have. I just love the Comets. Some are over a foot long.

I use Benonite Clay Krim.....

It really keeps it clear....
that part of the pond is almost 3 feet deep....

now if I could control the string algea, I would be a happy guy.

Jenny, how long does it take for your lillies to have pads like that? Mine are very small and dainty. I have 6 pads now breaking the surface. It has been growing for about 3 weeks now..... it's a colorata......

Jeff, this year I have done nothing to my pond. I have my lillies planted in those 2 gallon mop buckets (plastic) from the dollar store. They have the handle so I can pick them up easily. I need to fertilize right now but am out of tablets. Haven't bought any pond supplies since last summer. They just come up by themselves. Of course my water never freezes and I keep my filter going year round. Just clean it about once a month and less in winter. Since I got the UV filter it has cut down on my work about 90 per cent! Before I was cleaning filters weekly and sometimes twice a week. Too much time. Actually I need to repot the lillies (I use cheap cat litter not perfumed or clumping) and fill with small pebbles on top to keep fish from disturbing.
