The large clusters of dark maroon blooms are striking.

Another new plant, just love seeing all the variety.

Yes, I got excited when I found this growing and blooming in my woods the other day. I have recently cut some paths through the jungle-like growth and sprayed out the poison ivy so I can see what all is here. And I have lived here for 27 years! Thanks for your comments, lenjo.

I just love coming to the PDB this time of year and seeing all the seemingly infinite variety of plant life. One of my ideas of heaven is to see, smell, and touch plant life growing in its native places. Can't begin to do it all in this lifetime. But the PDB certainly gives me lots of exposure.Susan, you must be quite a horticulturalist if you could identify this? I would see something but not know what it was. Do you have some good reference books?

I have a Missouri Wildflowers book that this was in. It is a most helpful reference, since it is specific for my locale. I also have the Audubon wildflower books and Botanica ( a very hefty volume ) among others. It is awful though when I go to look something up... I suddenly find that a great deal of time has passed while I turned the pages looking at plant after wonderful plant. I, too, would like to spend eternity enjoying the beauty of all God's plants.

Wonderful and unusual color. Great photo. I use the Missouri wwebpage to isentify a lot of my plants. It is super. Thanks for sharing this magnificent plant.
