Franklin, LA(Zone 9b)

yesterday i was at the local "nursery" just looking around
i noticed a pot labeled 'angel trumpet - $10' so i asked the lady if she had any named brugs
she looked at me like i'd lost my mind, and asked what the heck i was talking about (the lady that works at/probably owns this nursery, btw)
i said "well i just noticed you've got a pot marked 'angel trumpet' , those are brugmansias aka 'brugs'
do you have any named ones?"
and she said "well you can name them anything you want to!"
lol.. i just giggled and we left shortly after that
..i thought that was funny enough to post :)

That is a cute story! What I really find funny is that I could see that happening up here in the North - but down in Louisiana? Very strange that she didn't know what you were talking about..............

I think that attitude tends to be the norm, rather than the exception. The average shopper at a nursery doesn't care about the name, they are just interested in the fact that its an white, yellow, peach or pink Angel Trumpet. The nursery owners have no incentive to sell named cultivars, because their public doesn't demand it. I See it here and in Florida. I don't even bother asking anymore. You have to go to a "specialist" like Cala or TLynn or Abutilon to purchase named varieties and cultivars... Hopefully one of these days that will change. Gretchen

I can see where that can happen.. before DG, I would go to HD, and pick out what looked pretty to me, I didnt care what the name was, if it was pretty and/or smelled good I got it. Im still real foggy on ALOT of things, roses being a big one. Iris, and daylilies well my gosh!!! I thought there was only orange daylilies, and I thought iris only had a couple colors. lol thank goodness for DG, cause now I can at least look up an unfamiliar plant to me, and see what others say about it.

Everyone has to start somewhere. LOL maybe you can make a buisness card for her with DG name and website on it, and tell her she can learn alot from this place.

it just baffled me..
she carries named cultivars of other things -daylilies, for instance- and not just the typical stella d'oro .. she had a few really nice named daylily cultivars
but i suppose you're right
there is a greater demand for daylilies than there is for brugs

If she does own the nursery, she probably should know, at least I would think she would want to know what it was who hybridized it and so on. I would think it would help her in the long run. Like with roses, I think they have the hybridizer and everything dont they? At good nurseries anyway, Im sure I have seen it. The time will come (even now some) when people will not just settle for just an "angel trumpet". Until then, thank goodness for Daves, and the internet where we know of reputable sellers, and VERY generous friends who share.
Im sure it was just passed down to her as "angel trumpet". I would feel mighty proud if I was you.. lol knowing more than the owner/sales person..you go girl!

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

I was at a nursery here a few weeks ago and they had the typical "pink, white and yellow". i asked the owner if he had access to the named hybrids and he said, "no, but i've been looking for them."
i told him that i had over 20 different named ones and his eyes got as huge as saucers. I'm sure they were full of $$ signs too.
I told him that he had until this fall to work out a reasonable trade and then id bring him all the cuttings he wanted, lol....
hes got the greenhouses to actually overwinter them, and i figure i might get a few cool plants out of the deal. (or greenhouse storage space)
i think the sooner more get on the market at a reasonable price, the sooner people will start wanting the named ones, just like daylilies and roses.
that was funny what she said to you tho, i can almost see her doing it, lol

lol.. well the real reason i asked about 'em was because the one labeled 'angel trumpet' was really healthy looking and pretty (no flowers right now, though, she said it was "peachy looking) and it was priced $10.. i was hoping to find nice named ones for that price.. hehe
because, even though i can probably find them cheaper online, i would still have to pay shipping...
anyway, enough of my rambling!
lol

While in TN, I had several customers who bought wholesale. I would tag the brugs with the correct name but they also wanted color on them. When they sold them, they tagged them pink, yellow, peach, etc. It's hard to teach old dogs new tricks, as the saying goes!
