We had a large pond dug behind our home. There are currently no other fish in the pond. Although there are lots of frogs and 3 turtles. When it rains the water gets cloudy..but clear up in several days. This pond is to big to add a filtration system....but I thought it would be nice to have some Koi swimming around in the pond...and also put some water plants in it. Can anyone offer some advice on this. We live on approximatly 4 acres of land and the pond is much larger than a typical water garden pond. Thanks for any help you can give me. If you have pictures of large ponds that have been lanscaped post some pictures and that would also give me some ideas. Thanks
Large pond and Koi?
I don't have a large pond by any means but I can't see why you couldn't put koi in your pond. Koi are a member of the carp family. Can you possibly put some feeders in your pond before you spend the $$ for koi?
The types of waterplants for your pond are endless. You can find waterlilies relatively cheap for shade for the fish. It also helps for the algae growth. I'm assuming it's a dirt bottom?
Yes Sledder the pond has a dirt bottom. Thanks for your help. Anyone else?
How deep is the deepest part. As long as it is at least 4 ft. deep in one spot---You would have the perfect pond for koi and for plants. I am green with envy.
Hi Debby....the pond is 13 feet at the center...that is the deepest point.
After a few generations your Koi might go back to "their natural state". Meaning the offspring go back to the "ugly" colour they were in the wild before we started breeding for nice colours. This happens to goldfish- I'm guessing it's the same for Koi.
Thats a nice sized pond!
Why dont you get one of those HUGE waterlilies (Victorias I think they are called) for it?
I have a mud bottem pond (not as big as yours) and I buy feeder golfish (15 for 1.00) all the time. They will grow to be very large. I also put feeder guppies, feeder platties, and feeder black mollies in it. They all do well.

debcooper: At 13 ft. you would definitely have no problem with wintering Koi and Goldfish over. Guppies and the others are tropical fish, they can't take our cold winters.
I can see your pond with Louisanna Iris[they are hardy perennials], and cattails at the edge as marginal plants. Plus the hardy waterlilies, lotus.
Maybe someday, We will have a pond, just want one about 4 ft. deep. Keep us updated with photos.
