Thank you both so much for the compliment. We moved to Foley, AL in February of this year (2004) and in April this cactus began putting on buds and I was amazed! The blooms lasted for a month, continuing to rebloom in awesome splendor. I can only surmise it was my cactus' way of offering the greastest "house warming gift" I received....Thank you again for the kind words.... SandPiper

That is the best Christmas Cactus I have ever seen. Ours bloomed better than ever, also late in the season, but yours is the best! Great pictures also.

WOW WOW WOW, mine sits on a window ledge on the shaded side of my home, I bought it 2 years ago, gets new sections, but no flowers yet, sigh. What a beautifull specimen you have there!!

Thank you Hanna1, for the compliment on my Christmas Cactus. The poor thing was so worn out after all those gorgeous blooms I was afraid it would die. But now it is showing signs of recovery and perking up so happy to report all is well. Mine is kept out side in a mostly shaded spot in our screened in sun room. I never move it. Thank you again for you kind words....hope yours blooms. Talk to it. They like that!

Wow, that is absolutely gorgeous! I live near Orlando, and we have had Christmas Cacti, but none quite like that...

Hanna! You mention that your Christmas cactus is not blooming. I had one in the house that did not bloom for years, until I realized that in my Zone (Washington DC) it has to be outdoors for several months and taken in just before the first frost. That way, it will know exactly when Christmas is. Apparenlty the plant has to be exposed to a certain change in available daylight, etc. So, out in the spring; let them enjoy the great outdoors; watereing only sparely and bring them in in November (for me). I don't know if you get frost at all; but still the day 's length may have something to do with it. Hope you have a housefull of blooms in December.

Below is my first bloom from a 30 year old Christmas Cactus. The bloom is 7" across by 8" long... I live in the Northwest. For the first time ever, I left the plant outside on the deck for the summer, where it was able to get the afternoon sun.

knees, thank you so much for the advise, I bought a new one a month ago, and when thru flowering I moved it outside in partial shade under my pergula, and it's growing!!! so I moved the one I had in the house outside also, now I'll just have to remember to bring it in, yes We do get frost here in the winter.
SandiV, for a 1st bloom after 30 years what a lovely surprise this must of been, I can't get over the size of it, just beautifull!!!!

Sandpiper, that's certainly a beautiful blooming plant, but it's not a Christmas cactus. It's actually an Easter Cactus (Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri).

SandiV, your plant has a flower more typical of an epiphyllum.

I was thinking the same thing- I've been coveting owners of Easter cactus for years now. ; ) This is definitely an Easter cactus.

Just joined . While checking a few things came across this pic. I bought two of these at the local supermarket a few months ago, one is red, one is pink but I have not been able to identify it until now,. Easter huh? Glad to know.
I have been collecting "christmas" cactus of different colors for a number of years. Can anyone direct me to a good source? I am in Western Canada. Looking for yellow.
As for non blooming my Mom had a little one she bought that never bloomed after the first year in spite of many attempts. After about 6 years I finally had it brought - by car - 8 hour trip - to me (cant stand to throw plants out!) repotted it, hung it in my east Kitchen window and told it do or die! And it sure did! Twice a year every year - a huge plant now, I can hardly lift it - just turn it about once a year - hundreds of blooms.

fancyvan, welcome to DG!!!!!! Mine are showing new growth this year already, I think it will be a good year for them, I don't know of any yellows, do tell?
