Cardboard Palm (Zamia furfuracea)
I just had a big scare, such a beautifull plant, my husband is a Paleontologist, so I bought him one and a sago, He likes that old stuff. Then our new puppy chewed up the sago, down to emergency, etc, etc. SO, I had to move it out of my atrium, I am so sad, but at least our little one is ok, but I will not take a chance with Cardboard around, He's chewed 10 plants already, including their containers, the fence, and on and on. He liked the tabasco, lol
be careful about the dog around cardboard palms for the dogs sake too. you may have already stumbled across the fact that the seed is toxic and can be lethal to a dog if ingested. do the same thing with the plant when its producing ceeds as you would with chocolate or antifreeze -dogs like them too- put it away and out of reach... till the seeds have been harvested/discarded. 'course we dont harvest chocolate bars or antifreeze but you know what i mean ;~}>
Right!!!! That is why I made the comment, and our emergency visit to the Vet! They made him throw up everything in his stomach, gave him a shot, We were extremely scared, thing is, there were NO seeds! I do have one beautiful Cardboart plant, not where he could chew on it!!!! He was only 2 months old when this happened, he's now 13 months old, and no longer chewing up everything in sight!! so thank you for your concern, but as you read, this is why I let everyone know the danger.
hi hanna1! sorry i didnt catch everything you wrote. i read these things after work around 2am ;~}> interesting about the "no seeds" thing. your puppy chewed on a developing cone or other parts of the cycad? did the dog start vomiting on his own or was it only the vet you mentioned that induced vomiting as a precaution ? my cat thomas hasnt paid attention to my cycads. dunno if he'll pay a curious cone any more attention... never heard of cats eating the plant but naturally im concerned.
Greyyhawkk, no my pup was made to vomit at the vets, and my indoor cats both eat most of my plants in the house, I have to keep spraying them with a leaf shine that has an animal repellant in it!
