Banana Pup???

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

I have about 4 little pups on my banana! (Please don't ask me the name.....I've had the mother plant for about 3 years and have forgotten it by now.) My question is....how do I go about taking the pups from the mother plant? Is there a trick to it or do I just do it?

Well for some reason I'm unable to post pics today...I just get an error message, but if someone could help me out, I would appreicate it.

How big is it Brinda,Is it in the ground or a pot?

Hey Doc....it is in a pot and the pups are about 10" tall now. Should I let them get bigger?

If they are in a pot,I would pull it,and hose the roots, get a good look at the pups, and cut them loose so you get the roots with them. This is a good time of year to do it.
Maybe this will help some.

Brinda ... if they are in a pot, it should be easy for u to do the job. take it off the pot. wash off all the soil from the plant. hose the soil out of the root system. then everything should be visible and easy to cut off or pull out the pup. good luck.

u're lucky it is in the pot. in the soil, it will be pain in the rear end to separate them.

Im glad I double checked this thread, I have a new to me nanna that is putting up 3 pups already. I thought it would take much much longer like my other nana.

Not trying to out do anyone - my Musa whelped 8 pups this first year .... outside ..... and, of course, Mom is history. SO - for those of us who have them "in the dirt" - what say you about the surgical separation .... or should I just let them go?

thanks

I would dig the whole lot up and then divide after washing the dirt off the roots....unless you want to risk cutting them apart without seeing what you are doing....gonna be fun!

I cheat, I just dig out the dirt around the pup, make sure there is at least one good root and grab my handy dandy sharp knife and saw away. Then dig some more if I have too so as to keep as many roots on the pup as possible. Dosnt take more than a minute or two unless you count the poor rootbound one in the pot, wich I repoted today. OMGosh, that took a while, that pot takes one of the BIG bags of potting soil to fill it up.
