But dang hungry ones. It's some kind of beetle but what kind and how do I kill them? They are having a feast on my garden.

Oh, my ... I am so sorry for you and your plants! The damage looks like they might be flea beetles. They are very small about 1/16th of an inch long (although the insects in your photos appear to be larger) and jump when disturbed. Most are shiny black, but some have an metallic bluish or greenish appearance. There are many different kinds. This is a link providing information about canola crops, but it shows the characteristic damage they do.

I was thinking flea beetle damage too, but wasn't sure if that's what those black bugs were. I know they love anything in the solanaceae family.

Well the only thing they seem to be bothering are my primrose.(Oenothera). So far anyway. But it sure looks like the ones in your links. Thanks everybody.
