I am ill........

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

I had my 4 humongous brugs outside, finally, as they were getting soooo big. This morning in the rainstorm, the wind changed, AND PRUNED THEM ALL!!!!!!!!!! I am just sick about it. All that lush, lovely growth is gone. *sniff, sniff*. I am so glad I didn't have my trees out yet, and I'm not even thinking of planting those puppies till I get some re-rod to put in the ground and tie them to. They're probably 10 feet tall, the wind would have snapped them like sticks. Here I thought I was gonna have blooms in less than a month, now I have to start all over. *sigh* will it ever end???

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Anna, I am so sorry to here this. I think most of us have experienced this happening to us. I have a 10" brug with a reinforced steel stake but when we had rain and gusts of winds it broke two of the main branches out of the top. They were mostly green growth and now it looks lopsided but I know it will fill out in a short while.

It is even worse when they are full of buds. I think you will be amazed at how fast they fill out again.

Anna, that is too bad. It happened to me earlier this year with ForeverMorr and she is just now beginning to grow some leaves. They do come back quickly, but if you lost branches it will take some time. I've always worried that if I staked them the top would break off, so I just stake the pots now and let them sway in the wind.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

I am very sorry Anna. I stake my trees way to the top. Each branch of a tree top hangs in a sling, which is tight on the top of the supporting stake.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Anna, how sad. And how frustrating. What is with this weather all over?

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Im so sorry Anna. Gosh. I sure hope for fast growth for you.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Oh Anna, I can relate. We had wind and rain last night and today.I was outside last night at midnight carting all my brugs in pots back up onto the enclosed deck, for fear that they would be trashed. I got wet and cold, but the brugs are OK.

Hopefully yours will come back soon.

Anna, they will grow back quickly once they get acclimated. Mine are growing like crazy..now that they are outside in the light again.

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

Oh, I know they will recover quickly, but these are the ones I had let keep their leaves about the first of march. One of them was at least 7 feet tall. That one "only" lost one branch, but that pot was in the corner and didn't get quite as much of the direct battering wind. The other ones just snapped off at the new growth. So frustrating, when I thought I was gonna have a show for the neighbors and passers-by in their cars so early in the spring. :>(

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Mine got hit with hail. The leaves all look like some got out a shotgun loaded with bird shot and let them have it. However, no broken branches....

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Anna and Woodspirit1, sorry about your brug damage. So far I have escaped. We have had wind every afternoon this whole spring. Maybe my brugs are getting used to it. The tallest are tied to bamboo stakes. I have many seedlings ready to be planted out but haven't had time to get the ground ready. Thursday I went to next town north and bought 30 more sacks of steer manure. I have already used 60 sacks!!. Have buds showing on 3 or 4 now, so soon the show will begin. Donna

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

When I first started growin them I some squirrels using them for a jungle gym...lost all my branches and no blooms that year.......Now I keep them away from the bird feeders so the squirrels have no reason to be near the brugs

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Anna, I hope your Brugs grow back fast. I know it is just disheartening to have this happen.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Anna, I can sympathize with you, we have had lots of wind and the new green growth just doesn't stand a chance. I think mine are getting used to the wind now, they are blooming.
