Big no no??

I grew these seedlings from Susie in RW, and by the time I realized I needed to separate the cubes, it was too late. The roots had all grown together, and I didnt want to lose any of the seedlings from me ripping at their roots. I planted them (6 or 7) up in a 7 gallon container.

Now what?? lol do I let them get bigger, so they have a stronger root system, and then try to divide them? Or can I let them go, and have a "unique" brug container with different brugs in it?

Depends what look you like. I would separate them right now, before the summer. I would take a knife and start the split and then gently see if I could pull them apart. If not, I would just cut them with a knife all the way thru, dividing the root ball. I would also take off a few of the lower leaves to compensate for the root loss. Then repot them and put them in shade for a few weeks. Only water when really needed. And if they started to wilt too much I would enclose them in a clear plastic bag that is damp inside and keep them where it is cool till more roots are formed.

Shelly, at that stage I think you'll be able to separate them easily. They have enough roots now to survive. I've grown plenty of seeds in community flats and had to separate ... after letting them go too long. They do fine.... I don't think you'll even need to trim the leaves.

Sue and Kell gave you great advice. Best of luck. Hope they do great for you.

take the plant out of the pot where they are in. fill a bucket or a round tub with water and some B1. place ur plants in B1 solution. these process will enable u to loosen the soil off the plants, thereby making it possible to see where u can separate the roots. hth.

I just did what Kell said. Because of lack of space I planted 4 cuttings to a 4 inch pot of some brugs last fall. I've just gone through and taken a sterilized knife and sliced them apart. They didn't miss a beat.

I think if you try to separate them, you might not even need to cut anything. Rockwool pulls apart easily and if you work it gently, you should be able to get the roots apart okay. Like everyone has said, just keep them in the shade for a while. Even separating them will cause a little stress and they will have to root into the new soil. Once rooted they should be able to take anything you offer them. They look really nice and healthy Shelly. You did good girl!!

Thanks for the advice! I will go ahead and seperate them.
lol thanks Shirley, the whiteflies are crazy on these. I tried some neem and water, but that kinda burned the leaves. When I seperate them, I will give them a good firm spray of water, and figure out somthing else.

My brugs love Neem. They actually look better after I use it. I wonder why it burned yours.

See Kell!!! Gosh I had such high expectations for it, I read what everyone said about it, and I have so much of it too lol.
I did it at night, and I soaked the leaves, I used a little hand-held spray bottle, and kept shaking it. Maybe I will try it again.
How do you do yours Kell?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I just mix with water in one of those pump up hand sprayers. I just do the undersides of the leaves. I have never had a problem. They always turn a prettier shade of green after.

Maybe you are using it too strong? I remember reading in Monika's book that brugs do not like oil. Maybe your kind is more sensitive to the oil.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

That very well could be Kell. I just did (what I thought was) a small amount of the oil but the bottle was quite small too. I will get one of those hand sprayers. Walmart?? Are they about 5 gallons?

Shelly...I am so glad you posted about having too many seedlings in one pot. I had forgotten that when I was given a cutting of a dbl. white, there were a few extra cuttings stuck in the same pot. Your post reminded me that I needed to separate them into other containers. Thanks! They are now done and I trimmed back the leaves. One had only a small amount of roots, but I guess with time they will all do well again. Hope you have good luck with yours!

You can seperate them like Kell has said Shelley.

Shelly, don't get a sprayer more than a gallon in size. They get too heavy. I use a quart sprayer a lot of times when I don't have a lot to spray and especially for in the house. Just measure the liquids, pump it up, and hold down the lever....can't get any easier that that. LOL!

lol thanks brugie! I would have had DH out toting the thing around! lol
