Blood Lily

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I found this at a local nursery. I planted the bulb and now have a flower, but no leaves.

Cal,

Mine bloom late summer. Years
ago Home Depot sold these bulbs
(dry/bagged) for $1.00 each. Sure wish I had bought more!

That's one of many referred to as, naked ladies. They produce the flower, and then the foliage.

Calla.. the leaves will come.. I forgot what was in my pot and thought it was a calla and threw it on the bog shelf of my pond (at my old place).. well wasn't I surprised when the darn thing bloomed and it was a blood lily.

Hope,

Naked Ladys is a common name associated with several cultivars. Almost every one that shows flower before foliage, is referred to as a Naked Lady.

Another reason why I tend to stick to botanical names. There's usually no confustion unless a plant is in the process of bewing re-classified. Kind of like how this blood lily went from Haemanthus to Scadoxus a couple of years ago.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

The nursery where I got this one still had them labeled "haemanthus".

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

oh did not know that. sorry.. thanks..

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

It's haemanthus multiflorus. Also called football lily.
It's such a lovely flower/bunch of flowers, should I say. But it just lasts for 5-6 days in a year. Mine finished its appearance a month ago when it rained a bit early during the summer.

Yes, Buriedtreasures, being well-versed with botanical names rules out the possibility of confusion with common names. I have noticed that quite a few plants are having the same common names. Yet, they are so different.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Another thing that confuses people using common names is that they are different in different areas. The same common name is used for a different plant.
The flower on this one has lasted over a week already, I couldn't remember how long the blooms lasted. I had one several years ago, but forgot to bring it in one winter(in TN) and it froze.

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

I use Haemanthus and Scodoxus when I list these on our site or Ebay, because as you can see, many people will refer t it by its old classification.

The flowers on mine typically last a week, but I was very surprised at the length the foliage lasted. It lasted nearly 10 months, but I'm afraid it may have cost me flowers this year. I think it spent so much energy sustaining the foliage for such a long period, that it has nothing left to produce a flower. We'll see.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Will it go dormant all by itself this fall?

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

In your area, I doubt it. I'm in 9b , and it didn't go dormant at all. I'd cut back any foliage around October , and let it rest. I really think mine spent to much time sustaining foliage to generate a flower this year.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I will try to remember to cut it back in October. We don't freeze here and gingers and elephant ears don't go dormant either. Cannas and Hibiscus bloom all winter.

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

Do you have any trouble with your gingers flowering? I would think they'd have the same problem.

The Cannas and Hibiscus are the same for us here, but I usually cut the Hibiscus back to the ground in the beginning of March to have a super full habit for the summer.

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

Cala, do you put your blood lily in full sun?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

The gingers flower. Shell gingers(alpina zerumbert) have been blooming here for over a month and most alpinas should do good here since they are from the tropics. It's not time for the others to bloom. I'll let y'all know how they do.
I know the shampoo(zingiber)gingers do good here and so do hedychiums, we just have to cut the old stems that flower off, so they will make new ones. My Globbas went dormant in winter and have been up now for a month, not flowering yet. They go dormant if let go dry in the winter. Costus is from the tropics, so it should do fine.
Weeds, the blood lily is in the shade.

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

weeds I have mine in full sun it gets a little morning shade but is in the sun the rest of the time I have had it in the ground for about 3 years this year looks like I am going to get two blooms on it maybe I need to divide it???

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

It can take sun??? How about south TX sun? Mine is in a pot, I can move it.

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

Mine is in the shade but looks like it wants to move to the sun, kinda begging me.

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

I planted about 20 last year, in various light levels, and all did well. The full sun ones did tend to bend for more light, when they were in full shade. The foliage won't burn in full sun, but the flowers were better, and lasted longer in filtered sun to partial shade.

I had one that I put in a pot, and absolutely abused it. I let the soil dry out, to where water almost beaded off of it. The foliage still held strong. I don't think I'd say it's ok to do this during its flower cycle, but once the flower is spent, you can pretty much let it do its thing.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Looks good Susie. The one you sent me is still just sitting there in the pot. Maybe it'll do something for me soon in the way of producing a flower.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

David, I have another and it's got a teeny little growth bud, nothing else. I am treating them exactly the same. I hope it grows and flowers for you.

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

I don't care too much to water them. It loves the full tropic sun but mine is in partial shade now and in the ground. I moved it to this place from full sun and the flowers were not that bright as I had seen them before. The foliage on mine dies back around December which is winter time. I rarely water them. The buds rise after the first rains around mid-to end April when it is summer time. Watering should be witheld at least a couple of months before April to get good bright blooms.

Caught this one peeking through the Costus today.

The flower wasn't this big last year. That's a regular sized CD

Susie, mine is finally starting to bloom. The flower is about half open now. The flower is going to be huge but the stem is quite short.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

This is not the best pic,but I never claimed to be a world class photographer either. This bloom is on a short stem but is as big as a grapefruit, though you'd never know just by looking at this photo!

I was just wondering about your plant David. So glad it decided to bloom!
