bittersweet vine

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

My postal carrier wanted me to see if I can find some of this rooted. I found some at spring hill, it's expensive there for something that grows in the wild, anybody got any to trade?

Bitter sweet is invasive. It can swallow up trees when it's happy. We have sections of highway here that are all bittersweet smothering the trees in it's path. It's the Kudzu of the north. You need to get male & female plants to make sure it's blooms and sets fruit. I have one out back I've been trying to kill for years. I dig out the roots... it comes back. I spray it with round up... it comes back. Mine doesn't set fruit... so I think it's just a male plant.

There are two bitterweet's: the native American bitterweet, which is not invasive, and the Oriental bittersweet, which is a terrible, awful, smothering monster; I pull out hundreds of them every year just to stay even. The berries are the same in appearance, so I'd want to buy American bittersweet from a VERY reliable source, and yes, you need both a male and female for berries. On the other hand if you DO want the Oriental, I know a woods where you can come pull it up by the truckload!
