hibiscus experts?

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

I bought this at a nursery a couple of weeks ago. The label is wrong. It says it is a hibiscus cannabinus. It is not, but I do not know what it is. It is starting to bud and the buds are almost black they are so dark. Any ideas which one it is?

I have no idea, but I'd sure like to see the color of the bloom.

Is that the one with the marijuanna type leaves?

My Texas Star has the same type leaves.

Does not look palmate enough for Texas star to me.

Well, here is the first bloom. Not the color I expected, for sure.

Its pretty anyway! What were you expecting?

The bud looked almost black. I thought it would be purple or something.

Looks like it could be Fireball. I have not done any research on it, but will head into the www and see what I can find.

I'm going by the foliage, not the bloom. http://www.millernursery.com/perennial/hibiscusFireball.htm

That's not the same one as the big discussion we had last year? Is it prickly to touch, rylaff? The bloom is the same color, but the leaves don't look quite the same I don't think.

Nope, not prickly. The color is such an intense dark, it really is pretty. Small flower.

looking at it and the leaves and the description of the flower I would say it is a malva

Foley, AL

I would say cranberry or malva?

Texas star is hibiscus coccineus. the one I had had skinnier leaves that this one and bright red flowers. I managed to keep it alive for about 4 years here in MA though it never reached the proportions I had seen it do south of the Mason-Dixon line. one of our nasty winters did it in, I'm afraid.
