Good morning all. I am new to gardening and I am ignorant of many of the terms here - but I am learning.. so please bear with me. Am I correct that the angel trumpet is the same as the Brugmansia? It sure looks the same. I got several branches from my mother's angel trumpet tree. I have always loved this flower. I've planted them in the ground and they appear to be doing well. But they are not blooming. They bloomed once a few months ago (South Florida) and now nothing. I am watching the neighbors bloom 3 times already. What if anything can I do to inhibit the blooms? I am doing nothing special other than watering twice daily.
They have been in the ground approximately 6-8 months
a new gardener - inherited Angel Trumpet
Fertilize, fertilize, fertilize. They like lots of fertilizer. 2 times a week double strength miracle grow or regular strength super bloom. Aslo about once a month some epsom salts and/or ironite
Hi Donna, thank you...
Fertilize - will do that was my next step - but I am always so afraid of burning.
Epsom salts? Just sprinkle around the base?
yes and it will get watered in when you water.
Squeaky.... you will not burn them esp with a water base fertlizer... I use osmacot and composted cow manure.. Some times because of the heat here in florida they seem to bloom better in spring and fall if you have them in full sun they need a lot of water until they get larger btw welcome to fourm
I forgot to say to mulch and mulch they love lots of mulch

Welcome to the brug forum Squeaky. Hope you will pop in often.
Pete, that is a gorgeous brug tree and your dog is cool too.
Hi Squeaky.. welcome to the forums.
Another point to consider about Brugmansias, besides plenty of fertilizer is that different varieties have different bloom patterns. Some bloom in flushes, some have blooms continously and some are just downright onery.
Thanks for the Mulch tip... I would have never thought if it..
Mine are planted in full sun and they seem to be thriving but not blooming. Thank you all for the tips.. and soon I hope to share beautiful blooms...
Irish your dog is a cutie, and the flowers are gorgeous..
Happy Saturday
MzMunchken Hello,
I assume because it was a clipping from a plant that seems to Always be in bloom - It would bloom the same. I have gotten one good bloom - such a beautiful tree - there must be 50 + blooms at a time when it bloomed.
squeaky...welcome to DG...I am new to brugs too, there are a few of us that are new, so we can all learn together!
BTW...I like your name...really cute...how did you choose it?
Just wondering, did you say your cutting had 50 blooms already? I do know that some brug blooms come in flushes...it sounds like you had one! Do you have a photo? Would love to see one! Thanks, Margie
Welcome Squeaky. You have come to the right place to find answers for all your question. There are so many knowledgeable growers and they are the friendliest and most helpful ones that you will find anywhere. I hope you become a regular visitor.
Welcome Squeaky, hope to see you around often. You will love it here.
Welcome to the forum squeaky.
Pete your tree is beautiful and your dog looks like a sweetie.
WOW Squeaky! Looks like you have been welcomed well. LOL! I want to add my HELLO also to you!
Donna and all...I noticed Donna suggested Ironite. Thanks to Scoot's earlier post today that I just read, DO NOT USE IRONITE in your gardens. It can make your yard a toxic waste site I read, just after 2 years of using it.
Go read the links Scoot has on this thread

WELCOME Squeaky!
Looks like you have lots of great advice to get you going.
The only thing I will add is...mine like to be talked to and have the leaves rubbed :=) LOL
LS...but please don't forget to tell others not to put their fingers to their eyes after rubbing the leaves & to wash their hands!!!
YES, we NEED to ADD that info! THANKS!!!
and 'smokers' should wash hands well before playing with brugs :=)
LOL
ladyswan and don't forget Cocktails, candlelight and soft music for the midnight rendezvous
;-P
Oh Scoot..you have me cracking up!!! LOL
Hi Squeaky, I'm new here too & to Brugs also.
You guys crack me up! But I do learn stuff here about what to do & not to do with these Brugs.
I just got my "sticks" in pots a few days ago, they are sprouting leaves, nothing to take a picture of yet.
They are still in my green hut, but it is open. When should I put them outside? We haven't had any frosts for a month. It's still getting down to 37-40 at night. 70-80s during the day.
I want to plant one in the ground aginst my house to see how it does. There are things growing there that normally freeze during our winters, but don't freeze there. Maybe if I mulch the heck out of it this winter, it will make it too.
Keep those hints & tricks coming!!!
Bj
Wow - thank you all for the welcome..
Hello to Everyone..
Picturelady - Unfortunately I do not have photos of the blooming. I'd say 50 might be pushing it now that I think of it - maybe 30? There was a lot.. But I have two tree next to each other. I have some in pots and another one on the side of the house. I have a few :)
Scooterbug - I think you might have hit my nail on the head. I was pruning - clipping off dead pieces which there seem to be quite ofbit of. Like the tip about 3 inches would look dried up and dead but up to that 3 inches the plant looked healty.
Based on advice received here.. I fertilized with miracle grow, the leaves have been lunch worthy to some unseen insect - so I sprayed them with a very mild solution of water and dish soap. I will put some mulch down today.
After one day it seems to be greener - and I think I am seeing new growth. or it could be wishful thinking - I will get some pictures to share as soon as I can.. Thanks again to everyone.
Ok pictures... This is a picture I found but it is from Spetember 2003. I guess I have had it longer than I thought. And really hadn't paid much attention to it.. As it looked healthy and happy... But recently I have gotten the gardening bug - where I want to learn and invest time into proper care, etc... And now comparing this picture to the current state it has lost alot of greenery. It is no where near as lush right now. I will get a current picture sometime soon.
Pardon the horrible picture - this was taken with an antique digital camera :(
Hi Squeaky! Welcome. Since my bruggies die down in the winter cold, I take cuttings (always above where the plant Ys) and place them in water until I see roots emerging. Then I pot them and save them in a heated basement in an old mansion where I volunteer. When I plant my brugs in the spring, I start with Black Kow and bonemeal. Then I take the advice of everyone here and fertilize them a lot and often. I have taken to using my rose fertilizer that has a systemic insecticide in it and it has kept the bugs away. But I also use Miracle Grow or Bloom when they need watering (not very often in our rainy climate). Good Luck!
