Kathryn Riggs??????

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

A Suave, it said on the seed package I was sent. Does anyone know what these Kathryn Riggs look like? Color? Anything? Mine are growing quite well, they are the biggest in this pic - and I'd like to know what color I might get from them......... (I must say I am infatuated with the green of the leaves - WOW everytime I walk by them - even hubby who never cared much about plants is impressed!)

They look just great. Are you sure it does not say Karyn Riggs as the hybridizer? That is our very own CC.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

our very own CC?

I think it was Shirley (one of them) that sent these to me. I just looked through my envelopes, and darn it, couldn't find one with a return address........... She is the only one that sent me Brug seeds, so if she sees this post, she'll know. I think it was ShirleyMD, but not absolutely positive. Or even Shelly? It was so many months ago, and I wasn't keeping good enough track (obviously)........ But you might be right about Karyn Riggs. And what is "our very own cc" A Daves Garden thing? If so - mine seem to be happy! I'm real confused now! Will check posts in the morning! This little girl needs some sleep so she can get to business out there tomorrow!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

CC is Karyn who is crestedchik. We call her CC for short. She is the gal that raises those feathery chicky mops that are such expensive eating. She also has an incredible garden and lots of beautiful brugs. Oh her peacocks are great eating also even if those long feathers get stuck in your throat!

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Kell: LOL! You really are a hoot............

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

hmmm - ok - (and that WAS funny, lol)! does anyone have a link to what these Karyn Riggs look like? Like color? I couldn't find them on the database. Sorry to be so naive, but I am very very new at this, and don't know. They've already grown another 6 inches or so - they drooped yesterday and I worried about them, then today the leaves decided to go the other direction. Weird plants, I must tell ya! Very very temperamental!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Karrie! If I am understanding your post correctly (I am beginning to wonder) Karyn Riggs is a member here on DG, NOT a brug. It seems she wrote her name on the seeds she sent you. The seeds are from some sort of suaveolens parentage.

http://www.americanbrugmansia-daturasociety.org/brugmansia_suaveolens.htm

But to be sure, email her thru Daves and ask her who the parents were. Her Dave's name is crestedchik. In fact I will email her right now for you and see if she can shed some light on this for you.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I don't think I got them from someone named Karyn, lol! I think think "think" they came from ShirleyMD. But I have received so many seeds - and I can't find the envelope (probably re-used it already) so I just don't know, lol! Where is Karyn from? That might help me remember as well. I'm not even 40 yet and think I'm having an alzheimers moment.

I just checked my OLD seed tracker. It's Shirley1MD that sent them to me. I'll send her an email and ask. Geez - My grandmother suffered from Alzheimers and started showing the signs around my age (she'd pay us $1.00 to find her glasses, that were on her head). Goodness - glad they are discovering more to help these folks since I probably am one!

OK
Lets stop all this confusion!I've never seen my name said sooooo many times.......

I sent ShileyMD1 seeds and some may have been suavenolens crosses
mostly pinks
If you can find a picture of First Day ,thats a Suavenolens cross that Susie grew out ...

Most of the Suavenolens end up looking like Frosty pink,or Isabella,( I have a pink Suavenolens that tends to have dark pink babies)but since I don't know who the pollen doner was they could end up looking like anything....but my best guess is that they will look very Frosty Pink......

Sorry I can't help you much more than that

And good luck with the babies...they look great.....

Thanks CC..................

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Thanks!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

OK - mystery solved - although I am still wondering what this is about peacocks and feathers.......

Got an email back from Shirley, and she said they are definitely Karyn Riggs, and didn't originate from her. LOL!

See........ I thought that was the name of the type of Brug - and also thought it was "Kathryn", not "Karyn".......

Just glad I kind of have an idea of what to expect now! :)

Thanks for the help and the laughs!

Kell doesnt CC send you peafoul in bulk? I know she sends the chicky mops on special days, because they are so expensive, but dont you get a deal on the peafoul? I thought I heard a story once about you missing a feather or 2. Can you remind me please?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

lol I forgot that!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Well - here is a pic of the Karyn Riggs today. They grow much much faster than the Isabellas that I have going upstairs in my sunroom. These are VERY fast growers.

I have two questions.

I noticed the bottom of these pots, there are holes and I can see roots now. Do I need to repot them or should I wait for them to get a little more root-bound?

I noticed, the one on the right has a slight scar on it's green trunk. Do these form a bark like trunk or do you think it has that straglebrand disease (sorry about that spelling). The one on the left has bigger leaves and is fuller. The one on the right has the scar, slightly smaller leaves, but is a little (slightly) taller. They were almost identical in dimension and appearance 2 weeks ago.

Can't imagine how they could have been exposed to a fungus or disease. I've started all of the 5 brugs that I have from seed, not cuttings, and have added tea tree oil and peroxide (small amounts indeed) to their fertilizer baths that I give them about every 10 days. (I just water in between).

They ARE growing fast. Surprisingly fast. That one plant just concerns me.

Also, should I separate them, just in case?

Thanks in advance!

p.s. I put the gallon jug there to give you an idea on size.

edited later to say: I have some window cleaning to do, lol! ICK! Think the flash really brought that out!

Here is a closeup of the scar I am talking about - looks like it is going onto one of the branches as well.

I should be an expert on trunk markings by now. Poor Monika, I have had so many wierd things that I ask her help me with Thanks to all Monika's advice, I can say with almost certainty that is not SB and not anything bad. The stems are very delicate and mark easily I have decided!

The plant looks like it should be OK in that size pot, but you could move it up. Ep since this is spring. The roots like a deep place to set down in.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

OK! Guess I need to go buy the spray paint I've been planning on doing all week! I have 2 large pots (5 to 7 gallon or so) in the garage that are black plastic my neighbor gave me from some trees. There's this new paint that adheres to plastic that comes in a spray can (Krylon I think). I thought I'd do some designs with masking tape on it, spray over it, and change the look into something more desireable looking, until I can get out and find "lightweight" beeeeeeautiful ones that I can easily bring in and out of the house, when I need to.

I have noticed that each time I graduate the plants into a bigger pot - I see a huge huge growth spurt! :) As long as they don't get leggy, which they don't appear to be doing, I think (think) they are doing ok. They are developing nice, thick trunks.

Thanks for answering the question on SB - when I saw that, it kind of freaked me out, and I needed to know if I needed to at least separate those plants or not, just in case. What color is SB? Do you know a link of a close up pic I can look at?

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I forgot to post another important question I've been thinking about:

Ok, I take them outside on really nice days, and have found they don't like it breezy (makes the leaves droop).

My temps have been lows around 40 or above, but below our normals this year (weird - we had record highs in March).

On the evenings that it IS warm (like 50+) is it okay to leave them outside? Would that be beneficial or non?

I need to get these climated to go outdoors for the Summer, we've just had some real bad weather around here that is unusual - even tornados, which don't happen around here. (our newbie Tootie Fruiti can vouch for that - our new member and nice person from Spokane that just joined last week).

What are the lows these can tolerate? I already know to leave them in a non-windy spot (poor leaves!). I've just been setting them on the edge of the porch because it's sunny there in the afternoons, and easy for me to bring back inside at night.
Geez - I must really sound like a mother hen or a freak to some people - mothering plants like this. I've just invested alot of time in them, and only have 5 so far to save! (still watering that flat of seeds though!)

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I would be sure to bring seedlings in,but the bigger ones will go down to the low 40s fine.
They look great,I keep mine in the basement, and they get pretty beat up making the climb out,so I am not the SB expert, but I can say that looks like a scar, the trunks get bruised up pretty easy.
You look like you have a great start.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

thanks RD - I needed that! I've been worried about them, mother hen me, and I think what I will do is wait until after this weekend is over, and start leaving them out overnight. I'm probably going to the lake for the 3 day, and just don't feel comfortable at this point leaving them outdoors yet.

Think I should talk or sing to them? lol!

hee hee

Kell - that was a GREAT thread you did there, for us to be able to look at and compare. You're right - mine, at this point anyways, doesn't look like SB. The SB almost has a "crusty" look.
