Funny Bud

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

This is on what I think is a CDW. The calyx is split all the way up to the branch, and it's hard to tell if the second skirt is coming out first?! I'll keep you posted. Any thoughts on what's going on?

I'm Linda, from Victoria BC and have been lurking for a while. I've gained lots of knowledge from you guys already, thanks. I was even lucky enough to meet and get some brugs off of Liz this past week. Yeah!

Hello Linda!! Glad you are posting. I dont know whats going on there. Very interesting at any rate.

Welcone Linda, Lucky you being able to get brugs from Miss Lizzy. She is the best. Every so often a weird bloom happens. Have you had normal flowers on this plant before?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

My Species did this often last year Linda. It was disappointing, but most of the blooms should be okay. I wonder if it just takes a tiny bit of damage to do this, like a bug bite or maybe wind damage? It is strange how it will happen.

Liz is a great person. I'd love to be able to meet her in person.

Hi and Welcome!

I don't know the answer but, the bud is interesting and pretty to me.

I'm jealous...how grand you get to meet Liz and get brugs too!!!

Is this the first bloom of the season Linda? Sometimes this time of year with the weather fluctuations the calyx can sometimes dry and tighten and the bloom wads up inside. Sometimes you have to open the calyx by hand just to free the bloom.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Wind damage can do that too. I've had three or four that I had to split the calyx by hand and the bloom was all wadded up inside.
Welcome to DG Linda.

Here it is a couple of days later. Seems the second skirt is coming out first, and the flower hasn't really come out of the calyx. I'm not worried, looks OK now, just seemed weird earlier. Thanks for the input. Linda

It was my pleasure to meet you Linda. I always love to meet brug people.
Early spring does odd things to first blooms sometimes. Culebra blooms are green not creamy white for an example.
Not to worry, it will stabilize when the weather evens out.
