Lets look at B.sanguinea species...

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Priessels book gives this description...
the calyx opening has 2-5 slits, narrow part of corolla at the end of calyx- not visible. Shape of corolla- tube shaped, flower 6-10 ", lenght of peaks at edge 1/2-1". Flower position-nodding. It has no scent and calyx is inflated.

Does anyone have a photo of a sanguinea to show? Any opinions, or hybrids from this species?

I am finding this a useful way to learn about the different species, are you?

Hi Linda. So glad to see you posting esp pictures!! That one is sure interesting. Is it pink? It looks big also.

Let me see if I can find a pic of my huge bush tree of mine that is no more. We got rid of it a couple of months ago. So sad, I had it for years and years.

Glad to find some more people interested in Sanguinea. This pic was made prior to the bloom opening.

This was my first Sanguinea bloom. I am not an expert but I will try. In our area the only time we get the correct temperature swing is Spring and Fall with the plant in a GH. I believe that Sanguinea need a swing from about 40 to 80 degrees F to bloom. At night during these seasons the temperature drops enough and daylight in the GH heats up enough during the day. Pete

Welcome to Daves Brug forum Linda and Pete. Hope you both enjoy your time here. You are both lucky to have sangs. I'm one of those that just can't get them to bloom.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Linda and Pete....welcome to DG. I am new to brugs and am so glad that my post on sanguineas brought you both out! Good to have more brug lovers. It looks like the two of you might become our instant sanguinea experts!!! How is that for a speedy promotion, from new to expert!!

Sangs were actually not one of my favorite when I learned what a brug was, when a friend gave me a cutting a few months ago....but I am liking them more and more. I love the deep rose color one you have Linda. What is its name? I would love to have one of those sangs. This happened to me with daylilies...I didn't like spiders (at all) when I first got into collecting them....about 1 1/2 years later, I started to just love them! I already see this happening with sangs, in just 1 1/2 months, instead of years!

The people on this forum are very helpful and friendly, so please feel free to join in and give us your opinions and ask your questions! Welcome!!!

Thanks for the warm welcome. When I seen pics of Sanguinea I knew I wanted one. Ordered some seeds. Wasn't a member anywhere so I didn't know that they were not supposed to bloom in our area until this year! I'll try again this fall for blooms. Pete

LInda and Pete, Welcome. This time of year I don't get to my computer very much. This evening it is even more windy than normal, so I'm here instead of out in the garden. I do fee sorry for my brugs that are planted out, the wind is tearing their leaves to pieces. The seedlings that really aren't large enough to be planted out yet are in the shade house and looking good.

Kell that is a beautiful Sang, I don't have any but seeing the picture of the one you don't have any more sure makes me wish for one. Probably couldn't get it to bloom. Donna

Mine was old, huge and so happy! But then I brought in all these brugs and one gave it a virus I assume. It suddenly had such badly mottled leaves. I was so sad to get rid of it. I brought in 2 other sangs from Kartuz and I think they may have gaven mine a virus. They both have very badly mottled leaves in the winter. I keep threatening to toss them. I probably will soon! Sangs are very susceptible to viruses I understand.

This was the trunk of my orange sang.
