Choosing a Vet

Decatur, IN(Zone 5a)

Hi all,
First of all, I'd like to tell you that I've been lurking here enjoying all your photos and your pet stories. Right now, the only pet we have is a Betta fish we call Blue. Its been years since I've had a dog since mine died years ago. Now I'm married and have three young kids under the age of five. My DH is not much of an animal person but after seeing how much I and the kids want a dog, he finally gave in. After much searching for what I believe is the perfect breed for us, we'll be getting a Westie puppy this June. We decided to wait till after we get back from our vacation trip and we figured it would be easier on me to tend to the pup in the summer so to get it housebroken and start a few dog training lessons. My problem is that we have lived here almost two years and still don't know anyone to ask referrences of a good veterinarian. I've been tempted to walk up to strangers and ask them but then I also thought, what makes a good veterinarian?? There are several vets to choose from here, two in fact are about a mile away. I was thinking of calling each to see what they charge for different services. I really don't want to go to one that charges an arm and a leg but do understand the importance of taking a pet for routine checkups and shots, etc. I was just wondering how most of you chose your pets vet or if you just went by a referral? TIA,
Gemila
