Maya is getting a sport

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

I just love Maya.... Isn't this sport a cute little thing? I'm wondering if it will grow.

Let that 'sprout' get a lot bigger before you chop it off and root it. If it grows straight you could have a nice little Maya Tree =)

PS . I also just love my Maya

southern, NJ(Zone 7a)

That is how snowbank started, right? A Maya sport?

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

How is this a sport ? Looks just like Maya to me, at least it looks like mine ?

Valdosta, GA(Zone 8a)

What is a sport?

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

I'm not going to touch it Scooter. I took off all the normal Maya shoots. I'm Hoping all the energy will be forced into the sport.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

A growth that is not like the parent plant =)

BRB .... Going out to look at my Maya ;-P

Scooter- I'll snap a picture in a bit.

BB7551- I thought it looked like Snowbank as well. I don't have the history on snowbank.

Bill- A sport is an abnormal variation in the character of a established plant.

You Maya has really produced some great sports Kristi. What are you doing to her to get her to perform that way? LOL!

Valdosta, GA(Zone 8a)

The reason I asked is I have a cutting that I received from gone2seed and the leaves look like datdog's picture. That is not what the leaves are to look like.

I just went out and took a picture of my cutting.

Brugs are new to me so that is why I am asking.

Thanks for the help,

Bill

Wow Kristi!! Congratulations!

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Bill Your leaves look right to me. Maya does show lots of variation in the leaves.

I wish I didn't cut off the other shoots before I took the picture of the sport. The whole shoot of this was different then the other ones. Here is a picture (bad picture) I snapped of Maya in the dark.

Shirley- Like I keep telling Kell, it's the pond water. LOL.... Really I think it's neglect.

Good job, Kristi! Way to go.

Beautiful Kristi ... is this the same Maya that Mayan Magic came from???

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Yep- Deb.... It's one in the same. Speaking of Mayan Magic, I have cuttings for you. I'll email you tonight.

Datdog,...
................ My mistake , Your sport/sprout look like my SnowBank. Guess I stayed out in the sun too long today, dang it was hot out .
Guard your new lil one, looks like a keeper =))

Looking great Kristi. It will be too cool to get one like Snowbank but with the growth of Maya.

Brugie, it is the fish poo!

Hello Maya fans. I'm a member of your crowd. I received a Maya plant, which was the 'baby' of my shipment. It seemed to be rooted nicely but now the top of the stem is woody, there were never leaves or any green on the plant. I think the plant will make it, the Maya seemed healthy upon arrival, I am VERY pleased, but I would like to know if there are any special Maya instructions??? We had a heavy rain today, but it was time to water. Are there other special Maya instructions I should follow??? TIA. I LOVE my little Maya!! SLike

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Thanks Kristi.

Your right Kell ... it has to be the fish poo!! I remember Kristi talking about that now. I need to rig up a way to get water from the pond.

Sherry, treat it just like your other brugs. I grew mine in full sun and it could take it here.

Shirley posted: I grew mine in full sun and it could take it here.

Shirley, given the opportunity, I'll let you borrow my sun for a day, whew, oh so hot, LOL, your watering chores would triple, plus!!!!!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Sherry, I water at least three times a day and sometimes more in the heat of the summer. By July I feel like the garden hose is glued to my hand 24/7. Last summer we had some horrible heat with heat index of 115/116 for several days in a row. The humidity was enough to knock you over. Still, my brugs did fairly well. They didn't bloom as much last year, but in the fall put on a pretty good show.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

And I complain when I have to water once a day at the end of the summer!!

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

I don't know how Snowbank came about, but, since it is tetraploid and Maya is diploid, I don't believe it could be a sport of Maya.

Does anyone know more?

datdog - your sport is gorgeous. I hope it keeps that much variegation. I'd love to see it when it grows up. If you want to avoid the risks of rooting it as a cutting, you could always air layer it and let it establish roots before separating it from the mother plant.

Montgomery, AL(Zone 8a)

Rik, what you say is true. Snowbank was lab produced to the best of my knowledge.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Hey Rik, since you are here I was wondering if there was any chance of getting a start of your violet stem elephant ear this year?

Shirley

Brugie -- You're at the top of my list. I had some bad luck and lost most of mine, but the friend who gave them to me had a huge stand, and I'm hoping to prevail on her again. I'll keep you posted.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks Rik, I'd still love to get one in the ground this summer.

Crestview, FL(Zone 7b)

Hey DD... looks like a New Guinea Impatient to me ;-)

Nice looking sport it threw... hoping that it continues to do as well!

Orange Park, FL(Zone 8b)

Lovely little sport it is! Is it still doing well?
