CLOSED: Looking for Pregnant Onion

Gonzales, LA(Zone 9a)

Anyone ever heard of a Pregnant Onion? Well I just missed getting one at a plant sale over the weekend. It was the cutest thing.....was a big bulb on top of the soil with leaves on top with little bitty bulblets on the side.....if anyone grows this I'd like to be on their adoption list. I have registered daylilies, lots of bromelaids, yesterday/today/tomorrow, yarrow, upright elephant ears and many other plants to trade.

Good morning Dayflower. I got your email about our trade. I saw this and thought I could throw in 3 babies from my preg onion. I went outside and saw three have popped off the momma. This was given to me in a trade so I don't know how to grow the babies. Let's find out.

Hey, Molly... If you have an extra baby, bring one to me at the TNRU, okay?

Hi Darius,

I went out and dug around that momma onion and found 4 more "ova". I put em in a pot, will bring to TNRU.

I never did much for the babies when they left momma. They just laid on the soil surface and later made their own root. Thants when I planted each in its own little pot. About 90% of the bulb should be over the soil surface when planted.

The advice I was given in growing these was to give it bright light if big growth is desired and keep it in less light if you want it to produce many babies. This I have found to be true. I also was told to keep the leaves trimmed for about 1 foot lenght and this would also help it grow more. I've been doing this for a while and it has grown some but not as much as I thought it would and it even flowered twice for me. Good luck with your PO babies.

P.S. When the leaves are cut/trimmed they will release a sap that to some people has caused an itchy reaction. If you are sensative, wear gloves or don't get it on your skin. I also heard it was toxic if plant was swallowed but in an old thread in another forum, one person stated that it would be toxic depending on the amount injested but otherwise, it would only cause a bad tummy ache. I've got three little ones who are pretty inquisitive, thankfully..they've never attempted to try one ;)
