Return of a poor relation

So it's not as pretty as brugs.
Nor is is as awe inspiring.
But it did lead me to Brugs.....so that is a good thing.

Here is an offspring of my original Datura tatula planted mid-summer last year. That Mother plant produced about a bazillion seeds and hopefully the offspring that have been flown all over the country are also thriving. This was a scraggley seedling 10 days ago when I planted it.....look at her go!

I love my lil datura's, too.
They have their own unique qualities.:)

I had one last year but couldn't keep up with seed pod removal. Finally removed the plant for fear a pod would burst open and I'd have a million of them coming up the next year. They are nice plants and the blooms are so cute.

That's so cool! I love it!

I got some of your seeds last year... How long do the seeds take to germinate?

I love your datura, Happenstance!! Are daturas as fragrant as brugs?? I've never seen a datura and cannot find any locally. Is there some place on the internet where they can be purchased?
Of course I've done a search and I've found nurseries that have them but they do not mail them. TIA!!! SLike

Brugie - I had a big concern about volunteers coming up because I let the pods dry on the plant and I know some escaped. Interesting that I had not one volunteer come up....course it could still happen I suppose. :-)

groovytee - it took about 10 days in the greenhouse to germinate and it was about 4" tall when I planted it.

Sherry - no they don't have that hit you in the face perfume that some Brugs do, but a sweet subtle aroma. I still have some seeds around here somewhere if you want to try this one, it is very easy to grow. (Be forewarned they get BIG, like 4-5' x 4-5'.)

How very nice of you!!! I would love some seed!! The bigger, the better, I have lots of space and my original brug was ten feet high and almost that wide last year and is very big this year; however, let me warn you that I've had brug seeds planted, rockwool, for a week with zero movement. Does the datura die back during the winter, like the brugs do??? Thank you so very much!!! SherryLike

Sherry...good luck with your datura seeds! From what I know about datura, they are strictly an annual...must be planted each year.

My brug seeds in RW were planted 4/26 and no sign of life yet either. The datura that were planted the same day, germinated a couple of days ago. So they seem to be faster at germinating!

I am getting some germination on brugs planted in soil on 4/20. That has just been within the last few days, too. So, I think we just need to give them some time! When they are ready, they will show their pretty faces to us! I know it is so hard to be patient sometimes!

I just emailed you Sherry, seeds are on the way. I left the Mother plant in the ground all winter, had cut it back sometime late fall. Just sat there looking ugly, but was not dead....just didn't have the patience for it to bush out so started with a fresh seedling. These things grow fast so I think it was a good move.

Thanks to you, I have some of these seedlings. I can't wait to see them bloom. The seeds were packaged so nicely, with the picture on them.Just going outside this week!! Thanks so much!!
