Caladium - when do they sprout

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

I'm in 6a and my caladium/tuberose have not sprouted. We've had very warm temps for the past few weeks (75-80 degrees) and not one has sprouted. I planted 50 caladium and 30 tuberose. They were planted in early April.

Do they take longer or did something go wrong?

They both take nice warm 'soil' temps before they will grow.
Soil needs to be a constant 65 or above before you'll see any growth......they should sprout for you by June I would think.
They can rot easily too, so make sure you planted in good well draining areas.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure what my soil temps is but everything else in my garden *bulbs, prennials* are huge. I couldn't image all 50 bulbs were dead.

Thanks,
k

Oh no I doubt it.....tropical bulbs like Cals and EE's just take warmer temps to start growing is all. If your really nervous dig one up and take a peek. :-)
Last year mine didn't get going till late June

thanks - starting to feel a bit better. That's far to many bulbs to lose.

shuhtzumom - I have one I started indoors under grow lights and only yesterday did I see the first sprout poking through the soil. So much for getting a head start indoors!!!

Shitzumom,

Our soil down here has been warm since 1977 (lol). It still took nearly a month for my caladium bulbs to emerge, and still today, 2 months later, I have some peeping out in places I had forgotten about. They come along as a very nice surprise.

Thanks guys. I'm very relieved and will post pics of those babies when they pop out !

65 is definately the minimum, but the higher the soil temps the faster they get started.

Commercial growers will force them in a hot house with soil temps to 100 degrees to get them out early in the southern markets.

I have been wondering about mine too, and have been taking a peek now and then. Bulbs look fine, there are even some tiny "eyes" poking out, but they must really require HOT weather over a longer time. I can't wait, I have 72 all potted up and big plans for them!

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

I planted a ton of them from the co-op.
The pots have been in an unheated greenhouse for about 2 months.
The temps there fluxuate between 90 and 40 early on.
Now 95 and 75 (Day/Night)

They started showing about a month ago.

Spiked about 2 weeks ago and this week I got the first 'true leaf' from a 'June Bride'.
This morning it appeared that about a dozen pots, at least, will be leafing by Saturday or so.

They will drive you crazy if you watch them!

Like the Aroids they are, the hotter the better to start.
Next Spring it will definetely be 'Bottom Heat' time! lol

I'll try to get a shot of them this evening.

When nite temps are constantly above 65 and day temps in the 80's they'll take off and make you very happy clear up to your first frost.

Thanks all for the info! The bulbs are still looking great, and the recent HOT weather should get them growing. I am so excited to have such a nice assortment of these, thanks to "eyes" and her work in the co-op. John
