How to chill hyacinths for NW FL

Tallahassee, FL(Zone 8b)

I would like to learn the correct procedure for chilling bulbs in my area, NW FL, Zone 8b. I know that chilling is required, but have never found anything that actually tells me step-by-step how to do this successfully.

Well, my very sweet DH gave me a pot of beautiful, fragrant hyacinths (7 in the pot). I would really like to learn how to care for these from now until next bloom cycle in this area. Can someone help me?

When do I take the individual bulbs out of the pot? How do I store them? When do I refrigerate them in our second fridge? For how long? When do I take them out of the fridge? What should I do with them to replant them?

H-E-L-P!!!!! please, from someone in zone 8b, who has successfully accomplished this, or anyone who does the chilling process. I have googled for this info, but didn't find anything really useful. All say they must be chilled, but no details as to timing for storing, refrigerating them, replanting them time frames.

Thank you to any area hyacinth gardeners!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Judith,
This is what I do and so far it works for me. At the end of September, all my bulbs get dug up. I let them dry a bit, and then the first of October I put them in a mesh bag and put them in the frig. They stay in the frig until late January, early Feb and then are planted.

Thanks, Rylaff!

I've heard people talk about chilling bulbs in warm climates, but once I began to consider doing it, I realized that I didn't have the details needed. So I just set the pot outside after blooms die back and leave them in the pot until September?

Should I water them outside with everything else until September, or will they rot? The pot does have drainage holes in it. Should I fertilize them after blooming like other outside bulbs?

My bulbs are in the ground but I assume you treat them the same. I do not cut the stems off until until they are completely dead. The bulbs are gathering energy for the coming winter. I do water mine through the summer.

Thanks much! I'll give it a try. They sure are pretty right now!
