Need non-gardening advice

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

We are planning to be in Canada for a couple of weeks. I need to call the states every nite. What will be my cheapest way to do this. I have a WalMart calling card but sure the pay phone will cost too... HOW MUCH?
Sorry this is not a garden problem.

When we Canucks are out of the country the cheapest way is to use the canada direct numbers; don't know if that works in reverse. When you arrive check with the local telephone biggy (we canadians seem to have monopolies run just about everythiing) and they should be able to tell you the least expensive method

Where are you visiting??

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

Jagon..
I'll try that THANKS..
We are leaving Florida in 2 weeks & going to Canton Ohio where the motor home is. Then heading for Anchorage Alaska . We haven't decided if we are going west..then north OR up through michigan into Canada then west to the Alcan highway. What ever way we go will probably come back another way to see all we can. There is another couple going with us & that's why we are going to Ohio.. They have the motor home. I have never been to Canada so I am really looking forward to it.

If your route takes you thru Edmonton, AB and you are still connected to DG let me know. Be glad to give you tips on my fair city (not so fair today - it snowed again)

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

Jargonjune.. We MAY have a laptop but not sure if I'll be able to get it on line. I'm pretty sure we will have one in Alaska.
Till we get to Ohio I have no idea what the route will be. That will be decided there.
WOW!! snow the middle of May. I don't think I would like that. It was 92° here today but didn't feel that hot to me.

Once you head through Fort St. John BC, make sure that you fill the gas tank at every chance. It'd be wise to have AAA, cause there's some spots that are always under construction, and hard on tires. I used to live in Whitehorse, Yukon, and drove the Alcan numerous times. Make sure you have a camera, and LOTS of film, bug repelelent, and of course, enjoy the late night sun. It's beautiful country. If you make it over to Vancouver Island, you can park at our place in Victoria. Linda

Linda.. along the Alcan will a cell phone work most places? I know it will cost a small fortune to use it there if we can at all but at least we could get help if needed. Thanks for the tips.

Sugar, I don't know for sure, but I doubt it. Let me check with Telus, to see what towers and coverage they have in that area. I'll get back to ya. Linda

It's not Telus, but Northwest Tel.

I did a bit of searching, and it's not easy to find out if they have coverage in all areas. Try this page http://www.nmi.ca/roaming/overview.asp and see if it answers your questions, or can lead you on to a site that can. Happy travels, it's really beautiful up there. One site you can not afford to miss, is the Fort Liard Hot Springs. It's along the Alcan, in the Yukon. It's a short, ~15-20 min walk along a boardwalk over bog, to 3 levels and temperatures of natural hot springs. It's heaven on earth.

Thanks for the help. I sure hope we don't have emergency needs. I have gotta figure out some way to call the states often though. I think a Canada prepaid calling card is my best bet.
I Do hope we can see that. I will keep it in mind. Is it a hard walk? I'm the youngest & I'm 67. DH is 73 & his aunt & uncle are in their mid 80 going on 21 *LOL* There is so much to see.

When you arrive in Canada please post what province(s) you will be driving through. :)

I don't know if I'll have access to a puter before we get to Anchorage. DH's uncle said they have a laptop that his son gave them but they have no idea how to use it. I HOPE to get it on line (if it works) . If I can I'll get in DG for sure as he told me that most campgrounds now have access. This is all quite over whelming to me. Just getting ready for it has been quite an adventure.

Every public library in Canada has internet access ... Saskatchewan doesn't charge but some Provinces may. The evening that you arrive in a community phone the library to book an appointment. :)

I think the library here charges a small amount for use of the internet. I remember that the walk was easy, but I was there about 10 years ago. I do remember it as the highlight of the trip though. Here's another link for the hot springs. http://www.explorenorth.com/articles/liard.html I've sent an email to Northwest Tel asking about cell phone area coverage along the Alcan, but haven't heard back yet. Have a wonderful trip. Linda
