Flowering Onion 'Purple Sensation' (Allium allium hollandicum)

Jonesboro, AR

I love the look of this plant. How tall does it get? I would love to add it to my garden. Is it very hardy?

They can get up to 36 inches. Mine are only about 2 ft. If I'm not mistaken they're hardy zones 3-9

They're really neat flowers. :-)

Hi, Melissa!! First of all, I think this is a very nice photo of the Purple Sensation Allium. I just purchased 15 bulbs of this from a clearance sale online. If my plants turn out half as nice as the one in this photo, I would consider it money well-spent. I didn't think that I would find any allium bulbs this late in the season so it was really good luck that brought these bulbs my way. Does the plant like sun? Or should I plant the bulbs in partial shade? I have heard both. Thanks!

Have a good day!

Mine are in full sun. Good luck with them!

Hi! Melissa,

I planted the bulbs in full sun. A couple of them have already come up. I planted them a little deeper than required as I don't want beautiful plants coming up and then just keel over as if they were top heavy.

Thanks for the advice!!

You're welcome, be sure to share pictures when they bloom!

Dear Melissa,

So far eight of the bulbs have come up. They look like good strong plants and I am hoping for a lot of flowers from them.

Thanks again,

Chuck

Dear Melissa,

Now there are about ten of the bulbs that have come up. Is that good for the purchase of 15 bulbs? They are all different stages. After this rain stops (Wednesday it is supposed to warm up), I will try to take a photo of the plants.

Take care,

Chuck

I'd say that is very good!! Can't wait to see your pictures!

Actually it is still raining a month after the last post. I was hoping to take a photo of the Purple Sensation allium. However, I wasn't prepared for this....is this what happens when an allium gets too much water? For the last four weeks it rains about twice a week 1/2 an inch or so. Do you have any ideas on how I can save the other alliums? Have you ever seen this before?

Thanks,

Chuck

wow, I don't know. My flower heads look like that right now, as they're getting ready to open, but they're about 2 ft tall. It looks like your stalk got "stuck" perhaps it is excessive rain? Could you rig up an umbrella for them maybe? I know you were so looking forward to seeing them bloom this year.
