Barley straw: straw, pellets or liquid extract?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

What's your experience? Which works best and most economically, barley straw, pellets or liquid extract?

Total water being treated equals about 500 gallons, split into three ponds (moms and ours). All use submersible pumps, nothing with a drain or anything elaborate like that.

TIA for your help! :)

Gardenwife,
I have never used anything except the Barley Straw and it has always worked great for me. But, this year I also bought some sludge remover with Barley Powder in it, and it seems to be working pretty good.
I also thought I'd letcha know that someone posted more about the UV Sterilizers on the thread we were disscussing it on. I think I am leaning towards getting one.
If you hear anymore about them, please lmk!

Thanks,
Traci S

I saw that post - thanks! Boy, the UV sterilizers are spendy - can't do that this year. The combo external filter/UVS units looked interesting. We's sure like to have a filter that was more easily accessible than the kind we have now at the bottom of the pond!
