Cardboard Palm
Zamia furfuracea

Cardboard plant is too cold sensitive for Zone 8 and must be grown in containers for winter protection.

aking1a, your cardboard palm is beautiful. I have one but it is small. It is a slow grower. This is the second winter that I will be bringing it inside. Is there some special care that I need to give it?
Thanks

I LOVE your beautiful cardboard palm! It is the most beautiful of all the others posted!! I have one that was nearly that tall and 8' across. I had to move and when I did it nearly died. It dropped at least half of its stems and stopped thriving for 10 months. Finally this month (June) it has 10 new stems coming forth and it looks like it's going to make a new life here in its new location. I hope it will someday look as beautiful as yours! I live in Pearland/Houston....just across the swamp from you. It should do well since the weather is much the same. (I was born and grew up in Baton Rouge..lived there for my 1st 40 years.) Congratulations on such a wonderful Cardboard Palm.

Thank y'all !!! Actually, there are two cardboard plants in that container - one large, one smaller. I do not do much for the plant except to give it compliments every once in a while. (I will let it know you sent one) The container is quite large and I occasionally treat it to miracle grow and make sure it stays warm for winter. My plant seems to thrive where it was at the time of this photo - it had bright to dappled shade most of the day with several hours of low afternoon sun. I let the container stay put rather than rotate it so the fronds would look towards the sun. This year, I moved it under my huge crepe myrtle (also posted) so it gets several hours of early morning sun and bright to dappled shade the rest of the day. And, of course, Baton Rouge gets lots of rain -

aking1a in Baton Rouge: I've enjoyed looking at your beautiful Cardboard Palm again just now! It's just sooooo pretty and I'm betting by now a full year later it's even bigger and prettier. Maybe you'll need to post another updated photo! My cardboard palm is doing very well now. A LOT of new stems and seems happy in it's new home. I think in another year it will be quite a show. I look at yours for encouragement! Thanks for sharing your palm.

NOW I know what I've been doing wrong! LOL Mine die back in the winter, but always make new fronds in the spring. I guess keeping them better protected is what they need.
