Pond snails

Mobile, AL(Zone 8b)

Has anyone added snails to there pond? I am thinking about getting some apple snails and ramhorn snails. Do you think they will bother my plants and water lilies?

I have the Japanese black snails. I bought them from Lilypon Gardens... the first batch arrived dead but the sent more without any hassles. They've lived and multiplied in my zone 5 water garden without any problems. As far as I know... they don't eat plants, just the algea.

Betty,
I was advised to get snails for my pond. I noticed about a week ago, my water turning brownish green and then greener. i have been a ponder for about 4 years abd never had an algae problem. Yesterday, we did a 3/4 partial water change and added all new chemicals, and I am hoping this will help. But , today I am stopping by my favorite pet store and buying a few pleascomus (sp?) Algae Eaters, I always do that, but only in spring and summer and bring them in before the temps start to get cold and they get huge. Last year, mine was over a foot long. And, as much as I appreciated the benefits of it, it sure was ugly.

Also, I'll be getting the biggest apple snails I can find, and ll other snails too. They won't hurt anything, atleast they have always helped me.

Thanks,

They are doing a fine job in my little pond. My friend gave them to me along with a few Singapore guppies and they have maintained the top quarter of my pond liner clean. they have multiplied too in a short time. My pond is less then two months old. They sit on the leaves but there seems to be no damage.

Leeann6 and Betty,
I would be glad to help both of you out, but until my snails multiply, I don't even have enough for my own pond now. The Apple Snails are good, but I have since found out that the Black Snails are the best. Get the biggest one's you can find. They may cost anywhere from $3.99-4.99, but they will help w/the algae. They won't get rid of it all by themselves, but they definitely help!

Thanks,

I've just added some snails to our pond. The pond is 160 gals. How many does anyone recommend for this size. Or is it kind of like the more the merrier. Any help would be appreciated

Hi, all!

I have been thinking about getting snails for my new pond as well. Poppysue, do those Japanese black snails overwinter in your pond? I'm in zone 6 and don't want to put in anything that will die. Don't want to have to bring anything in for the winter, either. My pond is 4'x6' and about 15" deep. I'm putting in a small heater for my fish for the winter. I have 3 calico fantail goldfish, 3 comets, and want to add a shubunkin soon.

Leeann6, welcome to Dave's! It's been my experience that the members here are all very nice and so helpful. I've made some very nice friends through Dave's.

Hi ponders....Anyone know if this snail I found in my pond tonight is a good or bad snail ?
He looks like the ones I find on some of my out of pond plants.
Thanks Bill
