Watch out for this one

We have been charged on our phone bill for more than 80.00 for calls to Saotome. Calls we didn't make of course. Supposed to happen because of our connection to the internet. Something to do with pop-ups? Apparently this is getting to be a popular problem. For the time being we are cancelling our long distance. Anybody else get this scam?

Not here...who is your internet and long distance provider?

echoes, are you using Broadband or Dial-up connection for your Internet?

When we started it was called Interlink. It's changed names a few times since then, but we're not sure they're to blame. Now they're called MDC.

Just a followup to this. Don't know why, but got a phone call from Manitoba Telephone System yesterday saying they are going to give us a credit for all the calls to Saotome (100.00+). A one time thing. These countries are being blocked so that calls can't go through. Let's hope.

Thank goodness, echoes. BTW didn't know you could cancell LD on MTS. How did/do you make calls? with a calling card?
inanda who is so happy you are back on line

So far I haven't missed long distance. They did charge us about 12.00 to block LD though. We will probably get it back soon.

After reading this thread my DH told me that it was happening here too, to those that had a dial up connection. Some people had bills of $800.00. :b

The last I heard, SaskTel was forgiving half on those calls. Hope they've changed their tune and credit all like MtS. Is SaskTel still provincial?

Yep! I don't know what is happening with the poor souls that got those bills...we didn't get one so I haven't been following it.
