mold on my germinating seeds HELP

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

please tell me what i can do, my germinating seeds in paper towels in ziploc bags have mold on them. They are not peeled, can i peel them now and soak them in something to help this ? THANKS

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Sure, try to! I peel most of my seeds. When I used the paper towel method last year, I would soak my seeds in 10% bleach solution for a minute or 2 before I would put them in a paper towel.

Since you got mold, I would peel them, then wash your hands very well. Then wash your seeds very well but gently. Touch nothing that you had touched with fungus contaminated hands. Soak seeds in the bleach solution and press into sterilized soil in a tupperware container and put all in a plastic bag. Do not reuse the old plastic bag.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much Kell you are the best!

Well, this is just what I would do, and have done when I would get mold last year. I hope it works for you! Make sure you leave the seeds pressed into but on top of the soil and in light! This is Monika's way so you know it is a super way!

I have not gotten any mold using rockwool this year. I skip the paper towels step completely now. I think Brugie has said she gets no mold by sterilizing her soil before planting her seeds Monika's way.

Sounds like Kell gave good advice.

I had a little mold grow on a few of the arborea seeds I just planted. I them planted fresh, un-peeled, and on top of soil I sterilized in the microwave. I even gave the seeds a bleach soak first but there was still a few that started to grow mold. As soon as I noticed it I spritzed them with physan and the mold went away. Seeds are germinating now.

May I add that I spritz with 10 to 1 bleach for mold.

Edit .......... Read : I spritz moldy seeds/seedlings/whatever with 10 - 1 bleach
;-D

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

I have the rockwool on it's way. i started soaking the seeds i got from Cala's store and then realized OH NO i am out of rock wool so i put them in ziploc bags in paper towels that i soaked in a peroxide solution till it gets here, and now i see mold!! Yuck. so i am baking some soil like Brugie does,Funny thing i almost let three earth worms meet their demise in my oven LOL so i guess you could say i am baking earthworm pie,
and i am going to do them like kell said "Monikas method" thanks so much for all the help. I really want to get these crosses to germinate. My sister has three acres of open field and we are going to build a brug alley! oh i can't wait i will post our progress, as it comes along. A PINK OASIS!!

Sue, all the seeds I used Physan on never germinated! I think Mary had same experience. I wonder what you are doing that we did not!

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I never soaked seeds in physan more than 10 mionutes. Maybe that's why?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

On most I didn't either, Sue. Some I forgot though!

I didn't know you baked your soil Brugie, I thought you used boiling water. Does it smell whenyou bake it?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I have never baked my soil Kell. Just the boiling water. There are so many ways to do it here and so many posting, I'm sure it was just a slip of the fingers on the keyboard. LOL!!

sorry Brugie I got that mixed up oh well, i wonder who that was who baked their soil? anyway i baked mine hope it works. I will try the boiling water next.

I have some questions..before I start use the brugs seeds that I recently got. So I just ordered the rockwool (my first time).. I hope I will get some good luck with those seeds like I didn't have any luck last time about last year or two.

So soak the seeds first.. what soak with? bleach? as I read? how long? a minutes or two? then peel and wash it or not? Plant it in rockwool or top of it? Should I put rockwool with seeds in special Rubbermaid container and sealed it with lid or plastic clear wrap? Put it under light or put it outside under shade? Which is the best..

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Mini, you can soak your seeds a day or two with plain water changing the water each day. When you are ready to plant, give the seeds a soak for about ten minutes with one part Clorox to ten parts water. You can put your planted rockwool in tupperware or any contain that you can either seal with a lid or slip into a clear plastic bag and tie shut. Anything that lets light through but keeps bugs out. They should not need to be watered until after they are growing well.
