First Clematis bloom

Mount Hermon, LA(Zone 8b)

This is my first time ever growing clematis. My 'Arctic Queen' started blooming several days ago, for the first time. I can hardly wait for the 'Belle of Woking' to arrive.

Your Queen is regally beautiful!!!

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

Very pretty!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Beautiful bloom.

Mount Hermon, LA(Zone 8b)

Thank you! I am thrilled that the plant even grew, much less bloomed. It is full of new buds, several of which should open in a day or two. Clematis are neat!

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Wow, wow, wow. Gotta have!!!

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

LSP---oh my!! I too am growing clematis for the first time. Planted two last fall and 'Arctic Queen' is one of them!! What a small world. I've got buds on mine and hope they look half as beautiful as yours. My 'Ville de Lyon' (on the same trellis as 'Arctic Queen') is already blooming like crazy.

This particular bloom was about four inches across. I hope the others will be as large.

Hi!

I just planted a two year old "Ramona" Clematis plants. It is about three to four feet in length. DO you think I will see it bloom this year?

Mount Hermon, LA(Zone 8b)

zuzuspetals (I love that name -- from "It's a Wonderful Life), this is my first time growing clematis, but I would imagine that yours should bloom, since I planted mine only a short while back. But I did get a jump on you with my 9a growing zone here in Louisiana. Let us know how 'Ramona' does!

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

zuzu....hello from Olathe!!

'Ramona' appears to be a clematis that blooms on both old and new wood. So I think you'll definitely see flowers if not the early ones in May (old wood blooms) then you will later this season on the new wood. Here's a good website on clematis and a link to your 'Ramona' cultivar. Be sure you are familiar with the pruning type of your clematis so you don't accidently prune off blooms.

I am so glad you mentioned that, langbr. I wasn't even aware that clematis was a perennial, much less about where to prune (old wood/new wood). Thank you for the information!

THANK YOU LouisianaSweetPea and Langbr for the information! Funny thing, today I noticed a that on one of my Clematis I see a flower "starting" and I got so excited.

I am growing two plants of the "Ramona" to go and grow with "Golden Showers" Climbing Roses. I saw this in a magazine and it looked very pretty.

Langbr - We moved to Kansas from Phoenix. We have been here since August. I thought I would really miss Phoenix but I really love it here. I enjoy the change of seasons and because of this I have jumped into gardening. We have a new house so we are starting from "scratch" on the landscaping, but I am having fun with this.

I started seeds down in my basement in March "mostly annuals" which I will be putting most in container arrangements. I live off of Woodland and K-10, my son is in the Olathe school district, he goes to Santa Fe Trails Junior High but will be starting a new school that they built next year - "Prarie Trails". Do you live close to me?

I supposed I should have sent you an email instead of boring everyone else that might be reading this!! HA HA!
HAPPY MOTHER'S Day - I read your "bio" and see that you have children too.

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

Sheesh- those are beautiful!

zuzu - you've got mail!

Beautiful bloom. I bought my first clemantis this year too. It is not a fancy one just on that was at Wal-Mart, Dr. Ruppel.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

White is my favorite and those are stunning on the trellis. Nice!!

LSP - got home late tonight just at dusk and went to peek around the yard. Arctic Queen had bloomed but not nearly as spectacular as yours. Much smaller and slightly deformed. Still have several more buds that haven't opened.

Unfortunately, DH decided Sat. was THE day to strip our deck, brighten it with some whitener chemical and re-stain it. I came out to see what all the racket was just in time to find him washing off the chemicals into my Clematis!!!!! ARAGK@#$%)!!!!! He assures me they are safe chemicals!! )%@#)$(!!!! We'll see what I end up getting for blooms. Meanwhile, keep posting those pics (they may be all I get to see this year!)

Brenda

Mount Hermon, LA(Zone 8b)

Oh Brenda! Couldn't you just smack them when they do that? LOL. Unless I barricade my plants, my DH will unwittingly mow over them -- "Oh, was that a plant?"

I hope your clematis survive. Perhaps if you flushed the area with some water, it might help to dilute the chemicals. Worth a try, because Arctic Queen is pretty, and I'm sure that when it gets a little warmer, it will put on a nice show of blooms.

Jean

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Jean -- I flushed it immediately with water in the soil area and the leaves. I think it will survive but I do think his chemicals did a number on that first bloom, 'cuz its all deformed (read crooked and twisted). Fingers crossed. Brenda

LSP -- Lookey what I took tonight!!! :-D~!!!!

The clematis is probably my all time favorite plant. Perhaps they got me started in gardening.

I also have 'Ramona' with 'H.F. Young' and 'Miss Bateman'. I looked up miss bateman in that link above, but couldn't find it. Closest variety was a poland type, looks exactly like the picture on the plant label.

langbr! That's gorgeous! What was the name of that chemical your DH used? I think I ought to put some on mine! LOL. You 'did good.'

Osteole, thank you for the great link, which is a really nice reference too. I didn't immediately see 'Miss Bateman,' but want to go back and look (but then I'll probably see another clematis that I want -- they are SO pretty).

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Osteole's link is one of my favorite clematis websites. Lots of info there. Here's a link to the American Clematis Society's page:

http://www.clematis.org/home.html

LSP - he used something from Home Depot that strips the finish of the deck and then he used a "brightener". I wouldn't recommend any experiments!! Hahaha. But you never know I guess!!!

Mount Hermon, LA(Zone 8b)

Another great link. Thanks langbr!
