Species of brugs...lets start with arborea...

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

It would be a big help to me to learn more about the different species of brugs. I thought we could start with arborea....

In Preissel's book...I was reading that "it is recognized by the size of its flowers, the shortest of all species. The corollas are between 41/2 -6 1/2 inches and widen out at the edge. At the edge there is a clear, heart shaped indentation between the turned back peaks.
It flowers evenly & constantly, not in bursts.
The calyx is long compared to the over all length of the corolla. It is covered by velvety hair and has a split down one side."

Have you anything to add to this?
Any photos to give examples? What named brugs that are of this type? Opinions?

And it's the only brug with a hairy style :)

Thought I would post this link to Aborea pod...

Here is a picture of a single arborea bloom.

Aborea is a very fuzzy brug. It's a nice soft fuzz .... makes you want to pat the leaves everytime you walk by :)

I don't think there are many aborea hybrids in the US. We have Tonny's 'Ida' but I can't think of any others. Their might be a few x flava hybrids available.

Aborea x sanguinea = x flava

The leaf shape is different as well.Shape is like a large holly leaf
with very pronounced points. This is "Ida" and the leaves aren't showing very pointed on this pic.

And leaf shape. It looks a little yellow but I think that's from the camera lighting...

Sue, that is really something. Hairy little thing isn't it? LOL This one is on my want list

Milton, FL(Zone 8a)

Good shots poppysue.I must remember to look inside the flower next time she blooms.I have a couple of seedlings that I am looking forward to seeing the blooms on soon.
On another note...some of mine, maybe all, have a large node or gall at the base, below the ground line, where the roots come out.I have seen this on rooted cuttings and on seedlings. It looks like a huge root knot nematode.1-3 inches in diameter depending on the age of the plant.Has anyone else seen these?

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

JT, I think I remember Tonny mentioning that too. I haven't noticed it on mine. I'll take a closer look tomorrow.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Is aborea a plant that every collector should have in his/her collection?
It is a species from the wild, right? and 'Ida' is a hybridized version, right? Is 'Ida' a arborea pollenated with self or with another brugs pollen?
I am trying to get this all from the bottom up! I like to have an understanding of what is going on...Thanks for your help!

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

'Ida' is an arborea x arborea cross. I'm pretty sure Tonny said it wasn't selfed... but two different arborea parents.

I spose it's up to you whether you want it or not. The flowers are small, and it can only be crossed to other arboreas, sanguineas, x flava, or vulcanicola. It limits what you can hybridize with it.

Here are a couple of leaves for comparison. This is Ida's

Between arborea and 'Ida'...if you were to choose one to add to your collection, which one would you choose and why?

Milton, FL(Zone 8a)

I don't think it would matter to me.The seedlings are always a surprise when they first bloom.Ida is a safe bet.You know what to expect. As far as which to choose, take whatever you can get.The true Arborea is not readily available here yet.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

There are several people in the US who have the species arborea. It selfs. They are always the same.
Ida is a Tonny cross and unfortunately he is no longer a DG member.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

So what do I have? It came with a tag True Arborea. It is not Tonny's. It roots very easily and it flowers all winter. Mine is now podding on its own with practically every flower. Last year it did not. I love the smell more than any other brug.

Unfortuntately, my DH helped me repot it the other day and he broke off a whole side. It does not matter though, it is a fast grower! I had potted it up in soil it hated and the whole time I was out of town it was very unhappy so i was eager to repot it again and change the soil.

I think my leaves are smooth. I will have to check.

kell...I would love a cutting when you get to trim her! I would love to smell what she smells like! It does sound like one I would like to have!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

OK Margie, and I owe one to Ada.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

B. arborea has a wonderful fragrance. In my opinion, she belongs into a collection, if the climate allows it!

Thank you monika...I was just waiting for someone to say I needed to have it!! I thought so too! It looks like kell is going to give me a cutting!

What does the b. before the arborea stand for? Brugmansia? Good to see you again!

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

It stands for Brugmansia picturelady. I have been very busy lately in my Greenhouses and in the evenings, I am so tired, that I am even too lazy to think LOL!

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

What are the climate requirements for the Arborea ?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I can tell you that they do not like the heat that Iowa gets. Mine did poorly last summer and was in afternoon shade. This year it is going to start out in dappled shade and stay there. Hopefully I'll get more blooms. I had one very small flush at mid summer and a few more blooms after the frost. I need to see more blooms. LOL!

Milton, FL(Zone 8a)

I keep mine in heavy, dappled, shade all summer. It blooms here in fall and winter.Ida has one lone bloom now and that will probably be the last until fall.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I'm glad to be getting all these growing tips so when i get one, I'll know how to grow it. LOL

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Ada, You & me both ... lol
......................I wanted to order one already but I'm so busy digging holes in the yard ....... and you know the rest of the story .Tee-hee

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Scooterbug, I haven't found anyone who sells them. LOL I know all about the digging in the yard.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Anyone up for a trip to Liz's ? Someone with a long trenchcoat with lots of pockets would be most welcome to join us ... LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I will have lots of seeds form this one soon and they will be pure Arborea. it is self podding. the first pod goes to Kyle, but after that, whoever who wants them.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)
