Thank you ALL for making me feel welcome to this comforting group of plant loving folks.

As soon as I get my journal going, I'll feel like I'm actually getting my "roots" into this homebase.. Where do I begin? Any tips????

So far the only additions I've made have been listing some homeless plants (still in their original containers) that I have yet to determine where their homes will be.

Since I'm also decluttering my house (every room and evry drawer and every closet) I'm seriously considering each stray plant as well.....

do I need it? do I have a place for it? do I really love it? is it requiring extra time to store it? did I throw my money away buying it?

QUESTION:
Am I too much of a softy by keeping them, even if I don't have a place to put them in my portion of this earth? Some of them have been around for years and years and I'm still not attached to them. Does anybody else feel as I do?

Hmmm... thats a hard one! I face that problem a lot, since I garden in an apartment. I usually do one of 3 things, a) make it a potted plant and make room for it, b) just give it less care and let it die. I could never just throw out a plant! Haha, so does that make it any better if I let it die..prob not :) but it sure makes me feel better!

c) And one more thing you can do-- offer it for a trade on the plant trading forum--then maybe you'll end up with something you will like. Or if you really have no space, offer it for SASE (self addressed stamped envelope) and then you can find it a nice home.

Thats quite brave of you to be decluttering everything like that!! I'm about to sort of do that, since I'm moving. And I'm very scared of it :)

As to where to start-- hehe, good luck! There's so much to read. I love going by the identification, brug, tropicals, container gardening, and cactus&succulents forums and just reading EVERYTHING. But you'll find your favorites. Most importantly, just jump right in!!

BaBzZ - Hi, pull up to your computor and dive in. What part of Cal is Greenbrae? Zone wise that is? There are so many different ones in that big state. Welcome in. Blooms

Greenbrae, CA

Let's see... Greenbrae Zone 9b. We're in Marin County just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. It takes us only ten minutes to get to San Franciso (not, of course, during a commute hour.) When we moved here the only request DH had was that I look for a house with a swimming pool. Reading in the sun was his passion. Greenbrae was the closest city to San Francisco where we had full sun and no fog. That was 17 years ago.

And Greenbrae is really green when you look at it from a distance. Our climate is best described as Mediterranean. Marin County is very pretty with lots of hillside homes as well as homes on the water's edge or with water views. We're on a hill, but our water view is our pool. We can walk to the San Francisco Bay or hike the many trails in Marin county.

In the last 17 years I've developed a lush, jungle-like tropical paradise (to us anyway) in the backyard, PLUS sunscorched skin, wrinkled hands, scars where plants fought back, a now-healed pinched nerve in my neck (pruning a tree for four days in a row) a hand that can no longer open a jar but can still wield a pair of pruning shears and a sense of being one with the earth.

Tell me about your area and how you spend your time.

BaBzZ, Welcome to the garden! I once upon a time I lived in Marin county, in Novato to be exact. That is ancient history and now I garden in the land of extremes. See you over the fence later.
