Hungarian Baby Bath

No babies here, just a bunch of plants hanging out in an old baby bath tub.

What a cute way to use a no longer needed item. Did you leave the drain open so it won't hold water to much? Congratulations on a successful project.

The original drain pipe had been cut off at the wall (it is thought that these came out of public baths/orphanages in Hungary) and was plugged with a cork so it could be used as a water feature. I took the cork out and it sits at just enough of an angle to drain properly.

Happenstance, you are KILLING me with pictures of your garden! I want to live there! LOL.

Are those sunflowers and 'Marguerite' potato vine? I love this combination, but was wondering about the sun requirements (here, the sun might wilt the 'Marguerite'). Yours seem to be doing wonderfully.

Your garden is a treasure and I always love seeing your pictures.

Glad you like it.....some members of my family think I've gone over the edge. :-)

LSP you are correct about the sweet potato vine and the sunflowers. There are also a couple of kinds of variegated sage and an ornamental beet. Now there's a story. The beet isn't quite what I expected ( see the images in the PDB http://plantsdatabase.com/showpicture/40604/ ), so I added the sunflowers to mitigate the extreme height of the beet!

The sweet potato vine will do fine here in 9b (very hot 85-110F summers) as long as it has plenty of water and has had time to acclimate to the sun/heat as it matures. They are tough plants, but will burn if you take fresh nursery stock and plunk it in full sun and have a heat wave at the same time. They are amazingly resiliant though and generally recover quickly.

The sun has bleached the ornamental beet and after the garden tour this weekend, I'll be chopping it back to see if I can't get it to "bush" a bit. This area get morning shade, about 4 hours of full sun, and then dappled shade the rest of the late afternoon/evening.

Thanks Miz Liz and elsie, glad you like it!

I may try it as a water feature next year.....was thinking that if I put the cork back in the drain line, added an old shower head on a short pipe w/pump and some aquatic plants surrounded on one side with a plastic shower curtain......I think my family will have me commited.

Now I'd love to see that. Excellent idea. Do you lie awake at night thinking up these scenarios? Really, are you a set designer?

Evening Liz -

Think "Alice In Wonderland"......that's the way my mind works. From vision to implementing an idea is the hard part....doesn't always turn out like I envisioned it. :-)

Sometimes the third time is the charm. Last year I did my garden bed twice. The first with succulents....looked OK. Then with potted plants, but it didn't really look like a "bed."

So this year I finally got it right. It has a quilt of scotch moss (which is in bloom just in time for the garden tour! They are the tiniest little white flowers), with a turned down sheet edge of the chartreuse moneywort, and a fluffy pillow of white petunias. (The pillow has just grown back this week after being devoured by ground squirrels. Sure made those petunias short and squat as they chewed them down to nubs!)
