Stalking your seedlings...when and how?

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Uphsss....that should have read STAKING...NOT STALKING !!! Sorry if I got your interest under false pretenses!! It was an error!

On the post about Kells seedlings, kell suggested that the seedling of a couple of inches be staked. How would you stake them and when would you start?
I gotta be ready for when my seeds germinate...

That is your subconcious speaking because before long you will be stalking brugs!!LOL. i am sure kell will come along soon and answer this question. I have never staked mine but , Ii learned a valuable lesson this past year the hard way one of mine broke in a storm, i staked them after that.

I have staked a few of mine the same way I stake other tall perennials: A green fiberglass stake driven in the ground far enough for it to provide firm support, a few inches from the base of the plant. Then I use natural jute to tie the plant loosely to the stake in a figure-eight fashion at the base, midway and near the top of the plant. I think some people that keep theirs in pots, actually stake the pot to the ground in addition. Most of my brug seedlings have no need for staking at this point. They have trunks over 1" in diameter with bark. The versi crossses though are kind of flimsy, so I staked them...All are permanently in the ground.

springsong...maybe I was not so wrong, as you pointed out! My brugs probably do feel like they are being stalked! I check on them every 15 min. or so !
What really surprised me about kell saying to stake them, was that it looked to me like the seedlings were only about 4" high!
Kell....where are you?! Out in the garden, playing??

They are pretty small but after the storms we had last night they are leaning. I am going to put them in the ground tomorrow.

Speaking of all the rain that many of us have gotten, what do you do about feeding when the ground is this wet, ours is just saturated to the max!! SLike

I always go throw some triple 8 around mine when i know it is suppose to rain like this. You can also throw soem osmocote around them and it will release when the temps get above 70 ( I think that is right it maybe 65 Degrees.) and the fertilizer gets wet.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Thanks, springsong!!! Where do you get triple 8, and apparently you don't water it in, huh; it's too cold to use the osmocote...

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

I get it here at the farmers CO-OP i just throw it out like chicken feed

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Thanks, springsong, I've seen Triple 13, but never Triple 8. I like the idea of doing that during prolonged rains. SLike

I think it was 5.00 or 7.00 dollars for a 20 lb bag

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

When I bought the 25lb bag of Peter's, I thought, what a shame to have to buy this much, I'll never use it all. Wrong. I'm already thinking about a 2nd bag, whew!!!

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Where are you guys finding the Peters? I thought I read that the 15-5-15 was good for the brugs! I guess I did find Peters, but not in that ratio. The man that was helping me said he never heard of a ratio like that! Only the citrus fertilizers had ratio's with the lower phosphate (middle no.)

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

I got my Peters from my #3 nursery man. Paid out the kazoo but I got it. I WANT the 15-5-15 but I need so many things that I want to get up a good order before I send off for it. I also want the Triple 8 for rain situations, tho I guess I could use Osmocote when it rains like this. Next year, you can bet I'll have something before the monsoons! None of my plants have been properly fed in almost two weeks, and the last thing in the world they need now is more water. I hate it when they get spoiled like this, and want to be watered daily. Oh, well...SLike

Would you all go over and read the 'calebra' post I sent this pm and see if you can help me. I'd bump up the post, but don't know how. My sweet plant is in trouble...

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

I ran into this post this morning on staking brugs...it was such a help to me, I thought I would bring it up for other newbies, too!

Yes, Monika has a great section in her book on brugs about staking them correctly!
