Saving "digi' photos to CD ....

Listening the the 'Digital Goddess' while on the road today , she mentioned that your pictures saved on a CD are only viable for about 2 years ???

I was thinking of doing the CD transfer in case of a 'puter crash. I can't imagine losing all the photos I have stored on my hard drive.

How about getting an external hd for storage ?

Or is there a trustworthy place on line to store a few hundred photos ?
