Inca Princess

Northern California, CA

I put my 'Inca Princess' in the ground a couple of months ago and she's getting ready to show off. Loaded with buds and growing strong to stand up against our wind.

Wow, can't wait to see the blooms when they open.

Wow, so many blooms, I can't wait to see them bloom. Tell me, is that several plants and how do you keep them so low to the ground??
I really like that fullness and I'd love to have some bushes. Are there particular plants that bush??? TIA! SLike

It looks wonderful Happenstance. Is Inca Princess the yellow or the red one?

Wow Happenstance! I have never seen such a good looking B. sanguinea cultivar. Please post pictures, when the flowers are open.

Because I bought her too late in the season last fall to put in the ground, she spent the winter in the sunroom. Shortly after she finished that bloom cycle I planted her out front.

The wind promptly blem off all the leaves and she pouted until a couple of weeks ago. Now fully leafed out again and loaded with buds, the plant has a definite "lean" to it from the prevailing winds, but is now firmly rooted at that angle.

The basic structure of the plant was that of a bush when I bought it, so a bush it will be. :-) Here she is on her winter vacation in the sunroom:

Liz- she be yellow!

Happenstance, do you think I could plant these in the ground in Napa and have them survive the winter? It gets pretty frosty but usually not a killing frost.

The color is gorgeous!

Happenstance,
Being so new to brugs, I love it, I get to see something new every day! Thank you for posting all your photos!
Where abouts in CA is Clayton...a warmer area than S.J.? I am wondering if it is around Bakersfield, with you mentioning winds?!

Northern California, CA

Well silly me, I just toasted my whole response so will start over......

There are so many microclimates in Napa it is really hard to say. It would depend on how many hours/nights of frosty temps the location has. You also must remember that I am very new to Brugs, my first Charles Grimaldis will be a year old at the end of May. My experience is very limited, but I have decided that they will all be in the ground and either be survivors or not. I'm not digging and moving them each year.

Our summer temps are 85-110F, winter low the last couple of years was about 39F, no chance for frost to settle because of the constant wind....that's about the only benefit I can think of for the brutal winds we get. :-)

Clayton is just up the hill from Walnut Creek, depending on what part of SJ you are in, I would guess our microclimates are very similar.

I am so pleased you like it, coming from the Queen of Brugs that's a big deal! By the way, I have a copy of your book prominently displayed in my sunroom......ready to snag some new Brug lovers at the garden tour to be held next Friday and Saturday in my garden. There are always questions about the Brugs even from people who are otherwise not really that interested in gardening.

Happenstance...can you tell me more about the garden tour at your garden next week-end. I will be in Concord for a daylily meeting...I believe I pass Walnut Ck. on the way there!

I am in Almaden Valley...the highs seem about the same or sl. less hot here, but we do get some below 32 degrees in the winter...maybe in the 20's of so.

Here's the blurb on the garden tour, if you do get a chance to come by please find me to say hello!

Beautiful Happenstance. I wish we could grow them here.

This is what 24 hours of temps at 90F did for my Inca Princess.....hope some of them last til Friday/Saturday for the garden tour.

And here's a closeup. If they perform the same way they did in the sunroom this winter, the color should darken up and lose the green tinge.

That's gorgeous, Happenstance! It sure looks like a happy brug...

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Happenstance...the tour sounds really nice. I don't think I would have too much time to make much of it. Too bad it is on the same day as my other meeting.
Thank you for posting the info. Would you be at the museum or at your home? I imagine at your home, right?

Very pretty, Happenstance.

Happenstance, your brug is beautiful and I hope it still is good for your gardentour. I am having a Garden Club tour here at my garden a week from tomorrow. Won't have any brugs in bloom tho. I do have buds showing on a couple but just small yet. Good luck with your tour. Donna

Northern California, CA

You too Donna! I expected to be in a panic by now, but I'm peacefully calm......nothing I can do to turn off the heat or make things slow down, so I'll just mix up bunches of lemonade and go with the flow. :-)

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Happenstance...hopefully it will not be so hot on Sat. See you right after 4p! Can't wait!!
