All 11 of the brugs I received today are potted, watered and in shock. Is there anything I can do to help them over this??? I'm a newbie and I'm not sure what I should do, if anything. It's very hot and humid here today and they are in the shade. Apparently, since all 11 are in shock, that must be what most shipped plants do, I'm guessing. TIA!!!

(((((SHOCK))))))
Is there a way you could enclose them or partially enclose them in a plastic bag or tent? They will wilt and pout but if you can keep the moisture up until the roots settle, they will bounce back and be just fine.
I like to soak all my new plants in a superthrive and water for 30 minutes when they arrive, it is suppose to help this, but since my three year old poured all mine out!!! i am at a loss with the ones i just got yesterday. I need to re-order me some.
OOOOOOH, thanks!!!! I have superthrive, should I use it now??? Boy, I wish I had known to soak them and I really appreciate the info!!!!! Anyone know anything else I might do???
Re the plastic bag - there are 11 plants, would a Walmart bag on each one work. It is so bleeping hot and humid here today that I would think the plastic on them would just make it worse....
I REALLY appreciate your replies!!!!!
Picturelady, I hope you are reading this, whatever you do, soak them in the superthrive before you plant. I'm just sick over this and don't want you to have the same problem. Sure wish there had been instructions with the order. Oh, well......thanks again to all!!!!!

Chele, you know I love plastic bags, but a few people told me after I had encouraged their use, that they steam cooked them because it was so hot outside.
Is your house cooler? I do lots of mine in my house in the winter and they do great. I would use plastic bags in the house. You wet the inside of the bag ten drain it so only beadnigis left, then enclose the plant airtight. It is miraculous the way the leaves perk up. I have done this with cuttings that were shriveled and when I look again they are vibrant.
Or just leave them alone. What ever you do, do not waterlog the soil. This is a common problem. You see the wilted plant and think it needs more water. But it doesn't. The roots are just not drinking it up right then.
If they were mine and I was sure I had thoroughly wet the rootball and the surrounding dirt upon potting up, I would make sure they were in the coolest part of my garden in complete shade and I may mist the leaves once in awhile but not water the soil again until it was dry. It can take a few days for them to perk up, but with roots, I bet overnight they do!
Let us now how they do!
Oh, kell, thanks, I don't know if I feel better or worse. I superthrived them and could tell some difference, and I just misted them and could tell even more recovery. Dr Seuss and Culebra, the two plants with the most leaves, were hit the hardest, the rest, I am certain will be fine. I rescued a white brug from a roadside stand last week and it was big and really hard hit and in shock and he is drop dead good looking now, and I did about the same thing to him. And, while I was misting the babies, a miracle happened, a wonderfully cool breeze blew in, it had been 80 degrees with HIGH humidity when they went into shock, they had been fine for several hours, then like clock work they all wilted at the same time!! I'm feeling better and I will always keep superthrive on my shelf, I think it helped lots. Thank kell, you are a sweetie!!!!! When the clock hit's 5pm, this girl is having a V&T, with a slice of lime and a sprig of mint, with lots of ice, I'm exhausted, whew!!! SLike
Oh my, a girl after my own heart!! Share with me! Shoot my DH just came home. BUSTED!
Sherry & Kell...I hadn't read this post, I just thought since I had my new bottle of super thrive, I would put some in the water I was soaking my new brugs in, until I was ready to plant them.
Sherry I think the cool evening will really help them too. After soaking my plants in ST...I am using it to water them too. That is what I did with the hosta I planted earlier. I should go and check on them though...they looked great earlier!
Sounds like you have gotten some good advice. Hope they perk back up soon.
I am in agreement with all advice so far, just want to add,if it were me,I would not be afraid to take a sterile tool, and trim the lower leaves, just don't panic, they are going to show signs of stress, put me in a box and ship me somewhere,I will wilt, the plant may have too many leaves to cover the energy that the rootball is able to provide.
Rootdoc, you are pretty cute, we have poked around the plants, with flashlights, and all seems well, tanks!!!!!!
Good!have a V&T and relax and welcome them home,I am sure you will be fine with them, next few days will tell the tale, probably best thing would be,try not too look,I tend to over love them, they do fine when I ignore them, die when I worry too much over them,go figure.
rootdoc...I too, have killed more plants with kindness than I ever have with neglect!
Glad to hear that they are looking better Sherry!
picturelady, I'd love to see a pic of your new babies. Which ones did you get?? Mine are so happy today, you would not believe they are the same plants. Of course it rained all night and is still raining today and they loved it. After I figured out I hadn't killed them, I realized that they were all coming back to life, except for one shoot on the Calebra that was limp, today it is perfecto! I removed the crushed leaves from all the plants and that helped too. I did notice when I removed travel damaged leaves from Calebra that one has to be most careful - if not, the removal could skin the shoot, which seems to be 'tougher' on the Calebra than any other brug I have. We are having drenching rain today too and I can already tell, on Maya, the runt, smallest in the litter, with zero leaves, that new growth is there. Man, they really do grow fast, what an amazing, fun plant. So, today, no work in the yard, shoot!! That means watching the Derby all day. We saw Smarty Jones win the Arky Derby two weeks ago, so naturally we are hoping he will do it again today!! BTW, of course everyone wears hats on Derby day and I wore my gardening hat, ha!!

picturelady - please send photos of your babies, okay??!!
Sherry, just keep them in the shade for a few days. They are greenhouse grown and need a little time to adjust.I will be more than happy to replace any that don't make it.Hope you enjoy the extras that I included.Your seed went out in a seperate, padded, envelope and also included some extras(Rothkirsch crosses)
gone2seed...OK now I get it ! You are JTfrom Country Gardens! Oh great, so glad to hear that you are on the forum too! This way we can ask questions if we have any. Something funny....these are the first mail order brugs that I have recieved & I forgot you said that there would be moss around the roots....when I lifted the plants and the moss feel off, I thought it was the roots falling off...until I realized what it was! I think my heart skipped a beat!
Sherry I posted photos on a separate thread!
OK ....gone2seed...a question...what do you suggest for fertilizing and when?

WOW!!!!!!, if you aren't a precious doll!!!!!!!!! JT, that's about the nicest thing in the whole world!!! All of the babies recovered from the (((SHOCK))) **I** put them through, if my mother knew, she would be so ashamed. Newbie here, I sincerely did not know, but now I do, the plants are perfecto and I learned a very good lesson. After full consideration, I do not think it was any thing but the sun that caused the shock. We have had drenching rain for days, with zero sun. When I potted them, I put them in total shade, but, unknown to me, the sun came out just long enough to put them into shock. They are in a new bed area, and I just did not know they would get any sun, at all. Poor babies!!! But, all is well, the drenching rain continued all night and all day and they seemed to absolutely love it, it was cool too. The Maya was the smallest plant with no leafs, but, guess what, she is green today and, cross your fingers, if we get any sun at all, OR, if the bleeping rain stops, I'll be she has leafs. The Maya is an inspiring plant, I'm not sure why, maybe because she was the runt. I also love the Culebra, so different, I REALLY like this one and hope I don't run into the difficulties that others have. So, Mr JT, if you have something coming up that you think I might like, please advise, or just send it to me and I'll send you a paypal, okay??? Such a nice man you are, thank you sooooooooooo very much!!!!! SherryLikeTheWine, Ye ole Arky girl
PS, to JT - I am soooooooooo excited about the seed and I hope my rockwool will arrive soon too. How should I store the seeds until I'm ready to plant, frig or freezer?? SLike
Sherry you should break the leaves up first instead of down, that will keep them from skinning the stalk. I went back to sowing in grow mix, because I didn't like the results I was getting with rockwool. That is just my exerience though, you might like Rockwool better.
Sherry, the seed arent fragile at all.Just toss them on a counter top until you are ready to plant.I soak mine overnight
before planting, then keep the planting mix slightly damp until they sprout.Sprouting may start as soon a s 10 days or it may take up to several months. In other words, don't throw away your starting mix too soon.
TLynn posted: Sherry you should break the leaves up first instead of down, that will keep them from skinning the stalk.
Thanks, TLynn!! I thought I did that and I will be more careful in the future. All plants well today, and seemed to have settled in nicely. When an occasional drop of rain hits them from the trees, they shimmy, isn't that the cutest thing ever??!!
JT, what do you soak your seeds in prior to planting??? Do you peel your seeds and where do you put the planted seeds, inside, outside, sun or shade??? Mine have arrived and I'm very excited and cannot wait to get a few in the ground.....thanks, SLike
My battery went dead or I would have photoed the whole clump...SLike....
Sherry...pretty! I am glad it was the camera's battery that went dead and not yours !! I like you, new to brugs with me, buddy!
Glad to hear your seeds arrived! Good luck with them!

Tanks!! I love the LA Iris. It could easily have been my bat-tree, it's been a long weekend with all the rain and storms. And, I like you too, new brug pal!!! Ya think we might be too yah yah?? Wouldn't be the first time I've been accused of that, LOL!! SLike
Who me yah, yah...?? I don't think so!!
Actually I was the first person on Tinkers to post the MOST posts! I USED to be a very quiet person....but not anymore!
I don't bother to peel my seed anymore. They seem to sprout just as well.I just soak in room temp water, sometimes adding a little Superthrive if I have it on hand.
When I was new I peeled all my seed.Eric kept telling us newbies not to bother. He was right.
If they sprout with the seed coat attached, just gently squeeze the seedcoat ,from top to bottom, and it will come off easily.
Thanks, JT!!! Hopefully I can plant the seeds without making a fatal error! I'm not going to plant many the first time, so I can make sure I do everything right. I've been reading about seedlings with seed coats attached, but I think I would likely be better off not peeling them, since I don't have a clue how to do that. SLike
