According to my book, this is not O. pailana. And I don't know what it really is.

This is Opuntia [chlorotica] var. gosseliniana. Just one of many possible expressions of this taxon.

Now that you mention it, It 'does' have the right coloring for O. gosseliniana.
And I have also seen long spine versions of this species, along with short or spineless versions.

This is the 'longispina' variety. It is lower growing (not as upright) and has the long whitish (gray) spines. There is a separate entry page for this variety. Would you like your image moved to the O. gosseliniana v. longispina page?
