Anyone have any luck getting seeds for Orchid Tree,/Butterfly Tree Bauhinia purpurea to germinate? I bought 10 seeds on Ebay and have only 4 left. I rotted two in seed starting mix, 2 more molded in damp papertowel, and the last two I tried again molded/rotted in h2o2 solution.
Everything I have read says they sprout easily (although none of the sites I've found tell me how)....
I'm baffled :-(

Rikerbear, I have a yellow bell orchid tree in my yard (I put it in last fall) It put off seeds for me this winter. I was given the impression that it was a "rare" tree. I wondered because with as many seeds as it put out, how can it be rare? I spose the ability to germinate seeds has something to do with that. I collected a lot of these seeds and I have tried to germinate maybe 1/2 dozen plus, in soil, sponges and paper towels. Not a one came up.
Actually I attributed the failure to myself, maybe it wasn't me or even you.
Why don't we try the water and peroxide method that the daylily people use.
Gonna do that now...

I tried the H2O2 method and the seeds bloated up and rotted.
I'm sorry your seeds didn't sprout either,ut it does make me feel better. :-)
You know the gal, our friend at Plants of Perfection...she did get the seeds to germinate........I know, because I saw the plants in pots..ask Cristina.............E.
Mine germinated very easy.. I got the seeds in trade about 3-4 years ago, planted in seed starting soil, kept damp and they all 12 sprouted..Forgot how long it took, but not very..I have the purple and a couple of them are white.. I shared the rest with family and friends..My trees are about 12-15 feet now.

The orchid tree in my yard reseeds all over the place. It's got lots of pods on it now, don't know how long they take to ripen. I'll try to remember to post when they are ripe.
It could simply be the seeds I bought weren't ripe.
I'm gonna plant the last 4 in potting mix, and sit them out side.
Cala please keep me in mind should you get any ripe seeds.
