Why give your zone & town? Read on!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Hi, everyone! Having your geographic info entered in you DG preferences is helpful not only to other members, but to you. Why?

1. If you ask a gardening question, very often the answer will depend on where you live (your zone and climate). If we don't know where you live, the answer to your question is delayed until someone asks this info from you.

2. Your location (town or area of state, province, etc.) is also important. For instance, zone 8 in western Oregon is very different from zone 8 in eastern Oregon. For the same reason as #1, location helps others give you answers specific to where you live and garden.

3. It's fun to see where members reside! Sometimes folks discover others nearby and enjoy face-to-face plant trades and visits.

So, speaking as a member and not an admin, I'd encourage you to fill out this info for your own benefit. :)

Hi GW, scooter,
That thread you referenced is getting a little off-track, quibbling about where to find your CORRECT hardiness zone etc. It's way more important to get a zone listed -- and the state too, because I think we all recognize that California 9b is pretty different from Florida 9b!

So newbies (and oldbies), go to the right column of any Dave's Garden page; under "About You", click on "Preference" and go to 'Location' -- add at least state and zone... if you don't know your zone, you can find it by entering your zip code at
http://www.garden.org/b2b/zipzone/index.asp

Don't worry about being in a microclimate, or the fact that you yourself grow things that you shouldn't be able to (or can't grow something you should) -- just get a number up there for others to relate to.

If you want to be on the cutting edge of things, look up your Sunset zone and put it in the first line of your "Note from" field!

Rose, Also you can go to the Member List (right column) and below the alphabetized list is a map with all the states. Click on GA, then click on the link to show Subscribers Only... you'll get a list of lots of the folks who post here regularly.

I was delighted to notice today that almost ALL the newest subscribers list showed locations! Good for all of us!!
