good soil problems turning to bad...HELP!!

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

I have finally found a helper to do the work I used to do but can't any more due to a couple of autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis. I had him turn my 6 year old ammended soil...not planted just left...garden soil, peat, composted cow manure, a little osmacote, a spray of Soli Life and then mulch. I've heard where fluffy soil is great. WELL! This is ridiculous! I had put in four fern leaf bleeding heart bare roots and when I watered them, I had cavities, I fixed that but when I stepped back my shoe went into the soil about 3 inches! I felt like we had created a bog! Will this settle down and compact some on its own? If not, what should I do? Thanks!

Hi Dale. I'm sorry to hear about your RA. Unfortunately my hubby suffers from that too. There are good days and bad days. He is doing better now with Remicaid, on top of the daily ibuprofen and prednisone and Methotrexate once a week. Whew! I think that is all he takes!

As for the soil, you may need to water it down really good to get it to settle. I have found that any time I top dress, add soil, till, etc, the dirt is nice and loose. After a good rain though, it drops, leaving the roots and whatever else that WAS flush, sitting above the soil line. You may want to lightly tamp it or like I said, give it a good squirt with the hose.

That is good advice Michelle. I just garden fork tilled mine. (manual labor is good for the soul) and I love the loose soil so once it rains or you water it, the soil will settle down and it will still be nice and easy to plant in- just not so fluffy! LOL!

Thank you...we had a good rain and it has settled down a bit! Badseed, I am on Methotrexate as well along with several other things. I had great hopes for Enbrel but it did nothing for me...has he tried Enbrel?
