Why this pond

Northport, ME(Zone 5b)

This pond is only a couple years old. I don't know what to do with it or even why I made it. Maybe goldfish this year. I know it's illegal but nobody has been arrested for feeding the Kingfishers.

This is in my back yard. I should stop trying to out-do nature.

Just do a water lily pond- and a lotus pond-and be so suprised how those Gold-fish, koi, snails, comets, annd everything got in there! Put some Cat Tails, and all types of marginals. Surely no one would be so nosey as to spy on your pond, and if they are that nosey they need a life!!!!!!! You could also make a beautiful waterfall, aand put a bird bath out there and make it your nature trail, kinda like I've done mine! Just do it, and enjoy it!

I happen to like it... but it needs some work, besides putting water plants inside, redo the rocks so the plastic dosen't show as much, then plant foilage perennials such as Mrs. moon, Brunnera, and Purple palace,Deadnettle,Creeping Jenny(but keep her in cotrol)heard it can be invasive around water.I am not sure what kind of sun it receives? This should help the overall look and help cover up the plastic. I would mow a nice walking path and yes add a birdbath and maybe a nicely colored shrub or two for your birdies hideout. Now, I was looking hard in that stream and didn't see any pretty plants or fish. That's why people put in ponds for enjoyment of different flowers and fish.
This could be really nice with a little work.
I would cover that ugly hose up with some stellas daylilys the fans drape and probably the hose would be hard to be see then.
When you could afford it??I would put a little cement bench beside it.
good luck!!

Frankay, What is illegal about your pond? I think it has promise--just add some plants in the area and in the water as well, and a few feeder goldfish. I'll bet frogs show up on their own. Be sure to add some floating plants or oxygenators so the fish can hide from predators. Good luck!

Sorry for any confusion. It's illegal to put goldfish in outdoor ponds in Maine. Lots of people do it anyway. They are worried about them being introduced into lakes and streams. A friend who built a pond large enough to test the dories he sells, "accidently" got some in his pond. They have done well for years and been breeding as well. The local kingfisher family really likes them too.

What a wild rule! I suppose mosquitos are preferable? Do people put coldwater fish in their ponds instead, if they don't sneak goldfish?

Sorry GW to take so long. Game fish aren't allowed either. I suppose I could legally put suckers in. You can shoot them with a bow and arrow up here, all you want. They are a large carp. I'm thinking about sunfish. Small (3-4 inch) ones will bite a gold plated bare hook. Into the cooler full of pond water, and there's my fish. Frank

I remember catching little sunfish like that when I was a kid...Piece of string and a hook without bait. Didn't get much easier!
