MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AP) -- Federal health officials have seized several dangerous pests called Giant African Land Snails from Wisconsin classrooms and have started a national search for the creatures, which reproduce rapidly, destroy plants and can transmit meningitis.
The snails, which are illegal to have in the United States, were used in classrooms by unwitting school officials, said Willie Harris, eastern regional director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Safeguarding, Intervention and Trade Compliance Program.
Snails have been seized in the past month from Wisconsin cities including Big Bend, Menasha and Milwaukee. Officials so far have not found any others elsewhere.
They are concerned the snails, about the size of a person's hand, could be transported to states with warmer climates, where they can rapidly reproduce and destroy plants.
In 1966, a Miami boy smuggled three Giant African Land Snails into the country. His grandmother eventually released them into a garden, and in seven years there were more than 18,000 of them. The eradication program took 10 years, according to the USDA.
Five of the snails donated to Nicolet Elementary School in Menasha by a parent were seized after teachers learned they were illegal, said the school's principal, Linda Joosten.
"They were very cool creatures," Joosten said.
The snails, native to Africa but also found in parts of Asia, are known to consume as many as 500 different plants and their mucous can transmit meningitis.
Snail smugglers can face fines of up to $1,000 per charge. Harris said people who have the snails without knowing they are illegal will not face punishment.
Your Brugs are 'LUNCH' ....
WOW keep them up there!! I will have snail night mares tonight and will be posting on that thread tomorrow about "Do you have dreams about Gardening?"
((( ss))) lol
Well, we have not much to worry about since they are from Africa and can not survive up here.
'Gardening dreams' ??? How about night-mares ? LOL
GOSH so big never see that size before.
Probably real tasty with a little garlic butter sauce. Any one willing to try and let me know?????????????
Yuck no thanks es' cargo-not!!
Amanda, come on, I'll bring you some at the GARU. Maybe some chocolate covered ones would be more to your liking???????
maybe , do they taste like oysters?
I just like to cook, does not mean I eat what I cook, but if you like oysters, I could flavor the snails to taste like them. let me know how many it will take to fill your little tummy.
Oh NO!! I sure hope people are smart and do not bring them here!!! We have so many snails already. Of course those would be easy to find in your garden but your shoes would sure be slimed for good! Squish squish!
That's all we need, another kind of snail to eat our plants! I agree with Larry, let's cook them before they spread!
lol I bet they taste like chicken....Wow that is alot of devastation they cause. I sure hope people don'e mix them up with the apple snails that get that big. Or any others. I hope I never see one. We could use the shells to plant burgs in.
Sandy
Yuck!! Now as far as the meningitis, Im guessing the only way you can get it, is if you rub your eyes after holding one (if infected) or eating one? Its transmitted thru saliva right?
Acckkk...like a giant slimy slug! Not even garlic or salt would help me slip them down. Can't stand raw oysters, need mine cooked.
I love um almost anyway except oyster stew. They are supposed to be good for your s-e-x life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mmmmm mmmmm, just fire up the garlic butter and throw them on a puff pastry! :) That is one big snail!
Chele, a woman after my heart. Hope you and the new little one are doing great.
LOL We are doing fine! Thanks for asking. She just wants to eat TOO often. Maybe I should feed her a bunch of delicacies loaded with butter. ;)
After being use to mama's milk, don't think she would take kindly to it.
OMG that thing is huge.
its so cute!!!
When I lived in the Philippines I had these snails all over my yard. They are HUGE..... I use to put them on my glass coffee table and watch them chow down on some greens. I know- I'm a odd one. They really were neat to watch. They move pretty fast too. LOL
I wanna pet snail!!!!!!
No more pets CC. This is what I keep telling my kids. LOL
Well look who is here! Chele! How are you girl? I bet there are pics out there beyond the brug forum of your latest creation. I really should get out more! I saw Peggy's great pics but none since.
Escargo,yummy!!!!
Goodness that is huge..yuck
Yuck. I can't stand slimey snails. LOL
EEEEWWWW I don't dare to eat this for sure make me vomit. LOL
Come on Redrose, they have to taste better than sucking the heads of crawdads or eating gator stew.
NO THANKS! =)
I know a way they could get rid of alot of them is to put them for dinner on fear factor. Yuck. CC there are large snails that are ok and they are apple snails. They live in water. Check out garden web under the aquarium forum. I want some for my 135 gal fish tank. They are cute and cool.

I sorta think that might be right, whatever, I love them and had the best raw oysters I've ever had in my life, a couple of weeks ago at the
Arky Derby. I was told that they are flown in daily from New Orleans.
If you like the track, I hope you will enjoy the race this weekend. We watched Smarty Jones win the Derby by several lengths, he's never lost a race, winning a number iof races at Oaklawn. If I was a betting girl, I would put a small wager on Smarty, across the board...I had the pleasure of meeting Pat Day, following the race, and, goodness me, he is one nice man, I was most impressed!!! SLike
All I can say is Yuk !! I don't want them in my neighborhood. I used to go out at night and hunt snails. I am hoping not to have to do that in my new house.
I'm thinking, if you love brugs, you must have excellent taste!!! Escargot is one of the most delightful dishes in the world!!!!!!!!! Oh, well, it may be true; one cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, huh????
